hello boys and girls; I did a oil change in my van yesterday and I use a aluminum funnel. Well that oil amazes me in how slick it is and when I'm getting the last few drops it justs rolls in like a ball bering. It something. See how dino looks doing the same.

The point being illustrated also is that synthetic oil will drain off the cylinder walls, cam and bearings after sitting for a day or two.

This will get you to the next engine rebuild faster! :D

So are you saying i should not use Synthetic oil in my '99 Benz like MB tells me to?
 
My bad, I thought I was on the turbo Buick board and you slipped in a M-B? :confused:

Personally, the only advantage I think synthetic oil has would be to make more profit for the oil companies. I am not a fan of extended oil changes, and would rather spend the extra $$$ on more frequent oil changes. :)

From what I have seen, oil gets contaminated long before the good additives are used up.
 
Some people misunderstand oils role in engine protection. They think synthetic offers better protection. It has it's place especially in OE applications where the engines are designed for efficiency at low output levels and run tight piston to wall clearances and hyperutectic pistons with ring packages that are designed for these applications. But on a hard running engine that makes 100+hp per cylinder off the shelf synthetics don't help. The oil is contaminated so fast at the cylinder pressures most of us run it doesn't matter. One day of racing is more than enough to contaminate the crankcase oil.

I'm sorry, but the OP was talking about a van, not a TB. And this is the lounge.
 
actually, i've noticed that while Mobil 1 does flow better than regular oil like Valvoline, it also leaves more of a film on a funnel than the Valvoline will after a while.. it's a thin film, but it is there.. it's also a little harder to scrub off your hands.
 
Benz uses mobil 1 and promotes it because they probably have a contract with benz. The company I work for puts 5w40 in everything from the ford focus to their cat and international engines with no problems and that is synthetic oil. If you read, alot of cam companies dont want synthetic oils used with their cams. Thats probably because they dont test them with syn oils. Extended oil changes are coming There are already companies like vw and audi extending intervals to 10,000 miles. But your are talking about fine tuned engines with vvt systems and direct injection. They are not running 28psi with 120 lb injectors But like Bison said. Run an engine hard and that oil will get cantaminated.

I've used Mobil 1 Extended Performance in my 10.5-1 compression 2.0L Focus SVT for 169K mi of it's 184K existence. I change filters @ 7K and oil and filter @ 13K-13.5K. I use cheap azz Fram extraguard filters even. Doesn't use a drop to this day, doesn't leak, doesn't do anything it hasn't since the day it was new.

Cost's me $40 every 13K mi. I expect to get 350K outa this car. Just put a whole new suspension under it 12K mi ago in the confidence of how this oil has and continues to protect the reciprocating assy.

You can't use those kind of intervals on a TR though, even a stock one.
 
I use Mobil 1 15-50 red label in one car, and the 10-40 red label in the other car changed every 3-4K miles, yeah turbo Buicks.

I'll use Valvoline non-synth. too in the GN since it doesn't have a DBB turbo that the manuf. recommends synthetic oil for.

Mobil 1 no smoke with the DBB turbo.

It's oil, change it often in a TR and it don't matter much what you use. ;)

Red label mobil 1 has the extra wear protection.
 
hello; My point is I like the stuff and will keep using it. I do buy it only when it's on sale and that's that. I also use Fram filters in both my vehicles with no ill effect. If I had a high dolla ball bearing turbo maybe I'd think different but if I had a turbo like that I'd have a turbo saver and that should cure any oil or filter problems.
I'm just going to keep doing what I do but I do put in the memory banks what I read and see.

I use Mobil 1 in my GN. Dino in my Honda. Each gets changed every 1500-2000k or 3months (which ever comes first) for street driving. Much more frequent if racing.
GN has Moroso Oil Accumulator for engine pre-lube before starting. Can't buy into this extended oil change thing. Never thought I'd see the day when I spend more money
on motor oil than whiskey!
 
For the most part, any high end car that reccomends Synthetic does so because the engine was designed to run that type of oil. Other cars like Fords reccomend a synthletic blend mainly because that was in the crankcase when it was certified be the EPA. Whether you can swith to dino from synthetic on most cars could be debated forever. Same with switching from conventional to synthetic, for the most part. I ran a Mobil station/ high volume repair shop and we sold the crap out of M1 and I could tell many stories, both good and bad. I do remember several high mileage engines that had minimal or no sludge/ wear when torn down at high mileages. If the car has oil leaks with dino oil, it's going to leak more with synthetic. Never use synthetic in rotary engines; it kills the apex seals. If your car smokes out the tailpipe with dino, it will smoke less or not at all with syn. (learned that from doing emission tests and repairs). If the car sits a long time with syn, it will drain into the pan way faster than dino oil. That's all for now.
 
hello people; I havn't started my car in a few months and with this crazy weather here in Mass. I did Saturday. I put a 3 gallans of hight test in w/staybill
so it's good for a while. But with this last M1 oil change I did you didn't here any lifters at start after sitting. I usually turn it over a few times to get the oil up there but I didn't this time. I'm sure it's the M1.

I changed mine in the GN yesterday in the nice weather.
Mobil 1 15-50 and one quart of 5-30 Im trying to get rid of.
It's all good. :p
