to make a long story short... about 18 years ago I started a job as a grunt on a natural gas pipeline crew within 1 year I was a foreman of my own crew. the gas company issued me an inspector by the name of Charles Hosteler (known as Hoss). Hoss was a loud arrogant SOB that had spent 30 years in the Navy on a diesel sub, then worked for the gas co. for another 27 years. Hoss & I butted heads a few times about how things should be done, but 10 min. after our little tift everything was like it never happened. he saved my job more than once. one example, he came out to my job one day & asked me how deep I plowed this one gas line into the ground, well I was young & stupid & told him 18", well he went out after we had left & dug it up. the next day before I started work he told me we were going to have a little sit down chat. he gave me an option, either I could remove the plow blade & put it in the back of his truck, or he could go to the gas company with this info. so into the back of the truck the plow blade went. that taught me a very valuable lesson at the young age of 20, & something I still hold true to this day, lying WILL come back to haunt you!! as the years went on every friday we would go to lunch & the wife & I would go to his house for a drink or 2 every few weeks. even after he retired from the gas company we would still talk every week or so. well one day the wife & I met him for lunch & he wanted my wifes full name & social security # because he said he was going to leave us something in his will. he said his children were worthless pieces of crap & he would be damned if they were going to see anything. well on December 3, 2007 Hoss passed away due to heart troubles. his sister called us this last week telling us he left us something. knowing Hoss they way he always laughed & joked around we though it would be some type of gag gift like a free lunch at our restaurant. well it was one of the nicest things the man had ever done for us (next to saving my job). it was a check for a very generous amount of money. the money from his estate went 3 places, his sister, (largest portion to) the battered womens shelter, & to my wife & myself. we thought long & hard what he would want us to do with the money. Hoss lived his life to the fullest, he enjoyed life. we believe he would want us to spend it on things that we will enjoy & not to pay bills. so that is what we are going to do. the wife is going to get a pool, & I am going to have custom interior put in my firebird. the pool will be surrounded by some special roses named Charles & the interior of my car is going to have a plaque made in memory of Hoss.

Very nice story, and your friend sounded like one helluva guy for sure! Good luck with the pool and your firebird interior.

Very sorry to hear about your friend's passing.
Good people leave way too soon.

Sorry for your loss. Very nice story. From what you said it sounds like you make a great choice on spending the money. You chose an very nice way to honor your friend.

it's funny how all of you are saying he sounds like a great guy, and he was, he was a hell of a man . he was 1 loud arrogant sob, BUT he was the most straight shooting man on the planet, if he didn't like you he would tell you he thought you were a di.k. 1 of the funniest times with him was, we were eating lunch & some young guy was sitting behind us, he was telling some women how he was in the Navy on a submarine, when Hoss heard him mention a sub he turned around to listen. the guy mentioned about the sleeping quarter & about having a curtain to close. Hoss spoke up & said you damn lier, your a GD lier, there a no curtains in a damn submarine, I spent 30 years on them boats. I do not embarrass easy but I wanted to crawl under the table. I had so many good times with him, & so many good memories, I just HATE that all I have left are good memories.

Sorry to hear that Steve! Make him proud!
