Yep the divider keeps the edelbrock intake a 180* manifold, and is ideal for big torque and drivability on a street engine lower and mid range.
 
Since it's divided in the center it will work like 2 seperate intakes on three cylinders. Don't remove the divider but you could drill a 1/4" hole near the bottom of it to equalize the pulses somewhat. This is done with the factory 4.1 intake just for this reason. It keeps the fuel mixture a little more even between both sides of the carb for better air fuel mix and overall performance with out sacrificing low end torque.
