Like it says. Is there a standard cap that will work for this thing?

As long as MSD still offers it you should be able to get it from Jegs or Summit, or even from Cincy Speed. I'm sure they will all have to order it though.

Here are the part numbers in case you don't have them:
cap-8553
rotor-8467

Is this the old style, none billet, MSD dist? If so I found a cap at NAPA (with the help of Odell).

I run an MSD 8475. It takes the old points style chevy type cap i got at napa. I thought i had the part # written down but i can't find it. If you do a search i think there is a post with he part #.

I might have posted the # once I found it. I think it was for a jeep?

Anyway, you could modify it to work with the newer billet dist. The only difference is it has a spring loaded clamping system that you would have to cutoff.

Thanks guys. Sucks they are on backorder. Hopefully DLS has some if they are. Trying to get this thing together for BG:smile:

I can't wait to go to Autozone/Napa, etc.. tomorrow and ask for a dist cap for a 1987 Buick Regal with a 3.8 turbo vin7;)

Is there anybody else that carries the 8551 cap? I need something too? Holla

I found some on Ebay, but they are not cheap lol. I haven't got one yet. I am not going to put the dist in my car until after the Indian TSM race. I have changed too much stuff already in the last month to worry about another change:cool: Especially since the BPG race is in 2 weeks and the car has not been on the track since the Norwalk race:eek:

Here's the straight scoop....

I just researched this out with Dan last week.
The MSD 8553 socket style cap, has been discontinued by MSD.

Per the MSD tech rep, this part number has been superceeded/replaced by MSD 8014.

Yes, the description that everyone will have will show that it is for a Chevy. You must have the MSD 8551 Billet Ready to Run distributor with the two screw style cap.

Although, this picture shows the old socket style cap, on the top of page 90, in the 2008 MSD catalog, it shows this 8551 with the new style Chevy male cap.
I let the Tech Rep know, that they were messing up by discontinuing that 8553 part number and not having any socket style replacement, but all he could say was, get a new set of wires. Well duhhhh.
Anywho, hope this helps a little.

Guys, I helped turbodragster out with this a couple months ago. Find a parts store that sells STANDARD IGNITION parts or can cross it. Get part #DR422 cap. This is the exact cap that MSD used. It does come with the turn clip hold downs. You need to cut off the 90 degree clips and pull then out. Glue new Socket head cap screws into the cap (just like MSD did) Mike:cool:

Yep, I have one spare cap then I'll have to swap out plug wires..

IMHO The new style cap is better with the HEI type ends. Yes, I know the ends are different on plug wires. With the old style Buick cap, the wires would pop off every so often. I was personally a victim of the wires falling off.

Sooooo it's your choice on which cap to use. If you are starting from scratch, go with the new style cap. If you have an old style cap, maybe it's an off season winter project. Or time to replace the wires

It sucks me and the others using a belt drive (forward facing distributor) that have custom made wires.

If you left a little length in each wire just cut the ends off and put the right ends on.
