i need to get rid of these hooker headers [leak to much] i have a few question.

1. what are the best headers
2. with the atr ss headers can i buy the pass side header and use the stock drivers side and cross over for now.
3. any one know the prices on any of the good sets of headers.

thanks guys

Ive heard nothing but good things from Poston Headers, They run about 500.00 and are built very well. I have a set, but dont have them on the car yet. The headers are ceramic coated as well to keep heat down, as ATRs are not. Just my opinion, but Im not really going to support ATR anymore due to their low commitment to the hotair community, my business is going to Mease Performance, and Postons for stuff.

Poston

Ive had the Poston headers/crossover on for a couple months now, and let me just say once I had them sealed up I havent even thought about them. I almost forgot I had them, and thats a good thing. Ive finally been able to move on to something else......... like tuning! Whichever aftermarket header you go with, it will be a bit of a bitch as far as installing/sealing up, but well worth it. Anyone who goes with the Poston headers I would recommend talking to Herb (TurboRegal84) before you install them. He has some good tips on making sure they seal up good and tight. Also, get the copper header gaskets that they sell too.
Ceramic coating looks great and seems to work great. My brother has ATRs on his '87 and Im willing to bet his headers are putting out a whole lot more heat than mine. I also like the fact that mine stay looking the same way, unlike the SS which discolors as soon as they get hot. I even got some oil on them and it just burned off after awhile till I couldnt even tell it happened (I was worried at first because I didnt know how the coating would react).
Price was a bit of a factor, as getting the Postons was a big step for me, let alone shelling out for the ATRs. If I had alot of cash I dont know if I would have gone with the SS ATRs or not. Ive always liked how the Postons looked ever since I found out about them. I hear that they also give great service if you have any problems (warranty) with cracking, etc.

P.S. they will sell you just one header if you want, but I would recommend getting both and the crossover if you can. If you put the Poston header next to a stock one there is just no comparison. The Poston header is huge compared to stock. Theyve got to be flowing!

does postons have a web site, i would like to see some prices on there parts and see if i can find a picture of the headers. what kind of steel are they made of, i just would hate to buy another set of headers and have them crack and then say i should have bought the ss atr headers.

thanks guys for the help

Not sure if they have a website, I kind of doubt it. Call them up (800-635-9781) and have them send you a catalog. Speak to Jim Poston or the guy in the shop (dont know his name) about the headers. Theyve always been real friendly and helpfull. Im sure theyll give you whatever info you need.
Also, I could of sworn Ive heard of SS headers cracking too (heck our stockers are SS, albeit a very bad grade of SS).

cool thanks man, do you know any one on here that might have a picture of the headers on there site or something.

If you want the best. Get ATR and get them coated. I just got my set last week and they look very nice. Well crafted and nice quailty. And they come with new SS hardware.

I'm running 1980 Cast Iron manifolds

  1. Cheap. Very cheap.
  2. Won't crack
  3. Retain heat well
  4. Same ID as the fabricated headers
    [/list=1]

The only negative I can think of is a weight penalty. Pros outweigh the cons, IMO.

  1. I forgot about that. A friend of mine was running manifolds and picked up just under .2 in the 1/4 and that was on a pretty stock car. Probably worth more on a modded car.

for real i have never heard of doing this. What kind of times will the stock one hold up to. What would i have to do to get them to work, will they bolt right up, up pipe and cross over. I dont even know what the 80 headers look like. Thsi would be good for now because i dont have the money right now but i have emissions coming up real fast and mine cant be fixed.

thanks for the info:)

1980 , anyone have a picture of these headers, and know if they work in the 11's-12's.

OK, here's the deal.

79/80 are like the 83/85 (note I wrote 83, because 83 headers are 84/85), excpet they are cast iron. Neither used an O2 sensor, but '80's have a boss that can be drilled and tapped. Or you could just put the bung in the up-pipe.

81/82 are cast but much smaller in ID. This may not be bad. The smaller ID may increase exhaust velocity. May help some cars, may hurt others (it's all in the combo, right?

Driver's side manifolds on 1979/82 are the same for turbo or NA.

Here's the pictures:

Hope this helps!!

Thompson's Headers - I had a set for my car, truely amazing!

I'll let everyone know how they work when dad gets "Nocooler" back together.

Any one know were i can get a set of 1980 headers, and the stock 85 up pipe will fit right.

does any one have a picture of the poston headers, are they good with cracks, will they fix them if you get one.

I can take a picture of mine, I think I even have a picture of them off the car. I'm leaving for Bowling Green later today so I'll try and do it before then.

does any one know if the 1980 manifolds flow as good or better then the stock 85 headers, it looks like the manifold are more of a bend then the headers, also what the weight is of the manifolds to the headers.

were can i get some, and about how much,

thanks
