think i found the problem...

seems that when the previous owner replaced the lifters, he did not know you had to replace the cam. So im going to get my oil pressure gauge hooked up and see if i did or didnt wipe out teh bearings, if i didnt then i put a new cam/lifters in it to hold the car over for the season.... hopefully some oil pressure is still there....

thanks again patrick, ill let you know what i find out

Your oil pressure wont be the problem. The metal grindings in the oil will be, from the non spinning lifters that ate up the cam lobes. Apparently the last owner wasnt the sharpest tool in the shed. Id plan on doing a complete teardown since the bearings will have the metal grindings embedded in them and the metal has circulated. Drop the pan and hope im wrong. Im suprised you dont hear a lot of valvetrain noise form the lash that has been created form the worn cam and lifters. I hope im wrong here.

actually, there is a little valvetrain noise that i could never explain, but i was told it was normal by another TB guy....

i had the pan down about 150miles ago, and there werent any shavings in the bottom of the pan, but the oil pickup tube needed replaced from some gunk:eek: The car has 3 maybe 4k on it since i got it 2 years ago, and ive changed the oil at least 3 times....

i know the oil pressure wont be teh problem, but it will tell me if i have a greater problem. Im not looking to keep this engine in the car, just want to know if i can still have a little fun with it for the remainder of the season.

thanx for all the help, hopefully ill get a minute to put the gauges in this weekend to take a look, then maybe pull a valve cover and check the rocker arms for movement

Check the rockers for movement and the pushrods. If the pushrods are not spinning then the lifter and lobe is or will be toast. You would have seen a black grime in the pan which would have been iron filings. You may want to check pushrod length at this time also since at one time someone had their hands on something they shouldnt have.

Maybe take the alky out of the equation and turn the boost down some more while testing.

Then ensure all sensors are in range.

And double check vacuum, plugs and wires, coil and module, computer.

Of course fuel too.

alky was turned off with boost down b4, same symptoms... car should get checked out 2morrow so i will hopefully figure it out for sure.

granted even if the car still has oil pressure, it will need rebuilt, but if it does indeed have pressure, i may just swap out the cam, grab a chip for it, and drive it the rest of the season. I planned a build over the winter anyways, i just wanted to have a little fun until then:rolleyes:

Id still drop the pan regardless.

pan was dropped no more than 3 months ago, ive had the car for a year and a half, so im assuming anything that was in the pan was taken out at that time. From the way it sounds i was doomed from the day i got it, it has never really pulled like it should, and now its beginning to make sense as to why

well, it was the cam:rolleyes:

pulled the driver side valve cover, and #1 was wiped, did pull the pass. side yet, so there may be more fun on that side:confused:

makes me feel a little better honestly, at least i now know why my car never ran to its full potential, now it all makes sense, and i can have a little hope again

thanx to all for the help:smile:

I had that happen with my GSX this spring. I had always used Mobil 1 but still had a cam lobe begin to go flat out of the blue. Go to your local GM dealer and stock up on EOS while you can get it and add that at every oil change with your new flat tappet cam. Paul

That was my main thought as early as post #4. New lifters on an old cam is usually a no go.
