In regards to what is under the hood, what get's disconnected so that I may pull my steering column out and replace it? It looks like there is just a 15mm nut, but the angle is weird and I can't tell if it's a nut or what the hell it is. I tried removing it with a 15mm socket, but the piece it's attached to moves all over the place and I can't get it off. Any tips? Thanks

I just replaced min on my '87 GN. There is one bolt/nut that seperates the in car piece from the part of the shaft that goes into the steering gear box. Ther also is a small shaft that has to be disconnected right at the firewall in the engine compartment. A small hairpin clip and a washer or two. Inside the car there are 2 big nuts that bolt the column to the dash, and 4 small bolts that bolt through the firewall. All that remains are all the electrical connectors then.... probably about 6 of them... Then she should come right out......

This is part of the shifter linkage. Be sure to disconnect it. The steering column from intermediate steering shaft is held in place with a 15mm nut and carriage bolt. Once you disconnect all inside the car, yank it by the steering wheel to remove.

How in the world do you get the 15mm nut off??!! I have a 1/4" 15mm socket on it, and that linkage just moves away from me when I give it any force. There is also practically no leverage. How did you guys get it off? Any tips?? Thanks

Actually, just got the nut off and the cotter pin off, but now I'm stuck on getting out the bolt that the 15mm nut was on. Should I just be able to push it out or does it need to be turned out? I can turn it about 1mm either way before it won't budge

SC removal

It just pushes out. There is a square just under the head....that locks into the square on the shaft... that prevents it from turning.... as well as I can remember.

Just a suggestion..... once you get the assembly out..... before you try and re-install...... removethe rest of the steering shaft.... off the gearbox splined shaft.... (one bolt).... and test fit it to the new column to make sure they fit (male into female). Sometimes if that 15mm nut you have been cursing was overtightened.... it can egg shape one or both pieces.... and make it difficult to reassemble. I had to rat tail file mine to get my new (used) column to fit my existing shaft coming off the gearbox.
