I got a buddy, that bought a cold air intake for it, and now he says he needs a tune for it.... I'm lost. Then what the hell is the MAF doing?? Taking a break?? Out to lunch? What's the MAP doing? What's the tps, intake temp sensor, etc etc doing then?
The only thing I can think of, is that it's maf is already close to being maxed, with the stock stuff.. but how, when the ZO6 maf works perfectly, on an engine 32 times the size of the G8's... Did they not use the ZO6 maf on that car? Any professional techs in here?

Drive it like you stole for 30 minutes and let the computer relearn the new driving habits and different parameters.
That'll be $50 please. Cheapest "tune" he'll ever get.
You can thank me later.

"and now he says he needs a tune for it".
So, just how does your bud determine he's in need of a "tune"???

How does he know he's in need of a tune? Cuz he read it on the superchips website. Apparently they have different tunes, for different brand CAI setups....

I was just there, and asked them the same question in their forum, but got confused...which is why I'm here. Heres the answer they gave me.

"Some volume but more velocity to the air.
The MAF and throttle body is the bottle neck.
With the CAI you are lessening the restriction and increasing the velocity of the air.
The AFR on these cars are close from factory, so with the combo, we had to optimize it with the tuning.

Is this right?

Easy way to find out... Datalog it w/ a tuning/scanning program. We use EFILIVE.
EFILive Web Site[You can take a look for free].
Unless the scan shows problems w/ MAF being maxed out, I'd rely on the datalogs to show what, if any, changes are needed.
As Ttwin2 mentioned.. Drive it, and see where the STFT and LTFT numbers go..
Many times, even a bone stock setup can be optimized, resulting in a good pick up in performance. [2010 Camaro is a good example].

That PCM has ALOT of parameters to take a look at.

Actually he likely does need a tune, the air kits change the way the air goes through the sensor and sometimes really screw up the fuel trims. Some cars lose power without a tune after the install. Vector Motorsports in Clinton Twp. did my sons G8 after we put on a rotofab intake, he picked up around 35HP on the chassis dyno. trans improvemnt alone is worth getting the tune.

Well, just picked up on this thread and since I have a G8 thought I'd respond (there seems to be a lot of turbo regal owners with G8s).

What CAI did your friend buy? 99% of the CAI's do not require any tuning at all, just hook it up and go. A lot of people do have their cars tuned either by a canned tuner, professional tuner or do it themselves to maximize the benefits of the CAI. I currently have a Superchips tuner and running one of their CAI tunes. The Superchips tuner is very much a black box in that they change your tune but you have no idea what they changed. All I think they are doing in the CAI tuners is changing the fueling.

I'm really thinking of getting a HP Tuner or EFI Live tuner because I want more control over my tune then the Superchips tuner allows. Superchips is a great tuner for someone who basically has a stock car and doesn’t want to tune their own car, but throw too many mods on and you’re into custom tune territory.

BTW, when did a 7.0L become 32 times the size of a 6.0L? Must be that new math:D

It changes the way the air goes thru the sensor? Don't those cars have maf screens?

no the new sensors are very sensitive to flow changes, I have seen a different brand of air filter move the fuel trims on some newer cars.
