Well, after trying to chase down this silly knock noise for long enough, I think Im going to go ahead and just pull the motor.

Check out my sig below for current mods. The short block is the main concern right now. I might reuse the cam if there is nothing wrong with it (only 1000~ miles on it), but not sure until its inspected thoroughly. We'll be looking closely at the pistons too. What are the parts of choice to go with (rings, bearings, etc., etc.). I am tired of messing with this motor, its got to perform and last this time around. I have thought about roller rockers, etc., but I cant see them being in my budget. If they are neccessary then maybe I will just have to take a little longer on this rebuild. I dont really want to wait too long to put it back together though.

I would like any and all suggestions. How would you guys do it if you were in the same situation. I am planning on running high/mid 12's (no IC) with alky. With slicks and race gas.... who knows. Keep in mind, the majority of the time this is still going to be a street car.

With the mods you have you should already be in the 12's. I'm running 12.80's-12.90's with a stock long block and mild lunati 200-200 cam. I have all the basic bolt on's with 42.5lb injectors and a limit engineering ta60 hot air upgrade. By comparison I also have a 85 T type with the same cam as you, 36lbers, port matched heads and intake, the only thing that's missing is an upgraded turbo. And all I can say is at 15psi this thing pulls harder than my 84 T. Now the problem is that in the mid to upper rpms when the heads and cam start to come alive the turbo is out of gas. I'm anxious to see what it will run just like it is. I would suggest to you to pull the engine put it on a stand yank the crank and have it inspected. If the cranks bad then just get it turned with new bearings and save yourself a bunch of time and money. I've been saying all along that it is probably the crank.

Don't waste your money on roller rockers, not worth it. My dad is using Total Seal rings in his daily driver T-type and his Stage II GN with great success. I don't know if it's normal or not but I stood next to the car during dyno pulls and there was nothing coming out of the breathers whatsoever. Don't know if this means anything or not but it can't be bad. We made the pulls with ~50 miles on the motor and hit nearly 7,000rpm. Pistons depend on your budget. If you can resue the stockers they will work easily if you're only looking for mid12s. If you go aftermarket I suggest skipping hypers and looking at some JEs. Opinions differ here a lot and mine isn't the only one so no one attack me. The most important thing is the machine shop the builds the motor. The parts don't matter as much as the machine work. Pretty much anything sold by the Buick vendors will work fine. You don't want to know everything we found wrong with my motor once I took it back from a regular machine shop and to an engineer and engine builder that has worked with a lot of Buick stage motors. Besides my warped, cracked, unshimmed girdle, the cylinder walls that tapered to ~.001 clearance with my forged JEs, there were a ton of little things wrong. This motor would've gone a few hundered miles, come apart and I would've been left stratching my head how it failed with all the good parts I put in it.

I was really hoping you found the source of the noise without pulling the motor. I hope that if you go to the trouble of pulling it you find a problem. My friend pulled his because of a bad MAF. Another guy pulled his and it turned out it was just the crappy California gas, he needed a lower timing chip when he moved here.
