i bought a 86 gn a while back that was in pretty rough shape. when i bought it the car didnt run, so far got it running, painted, and put alot of money into it. But there are still some problems i want to address and im loosing my mind trying to figure everything out. i went to a few mechanics who ripped me off pretty bad.( they said the problems were fixed and still they havent been fixed). i have been trying to work on it myself but i have no idea what is right and what is wrong as this is my first buick. Wanted to see if anyone around the LA or Ontario area would be soo kind as to check out the car and give me some pointers. i can supply some beer and my everlasting thanks in return. i kno u guys on here have alot of knowledge about these cars so any help would be much appreciated.

To start off with, what problems do you speak off?
 
Well to so far it seems like the car is running super rich, u can smell the gas at idle. also it smokes from the exhaust sometimes. cant tell its oil or gas smoke from the exhaust. i was told that it was the valve guides causing the smoke and told that doing the heads would fix the problem, so i had them do a head job.after that it still was smoking, so i was told it was the turbo, so i replaced the turbo with a new bigger one. i just keep chasing lil issues and i can never figure out. so maybe some fresh eyes and someone who knows the car can point me in the right direction..
 
sorry, no scanmaster. i have been hearing its a must, so as soon as i have some money saved up im going to buy one.
 
A faulty or out of range sensor can cause a Rich condition. As well as idle and driveability problems. Do you have an Engine light on?
 
Do you have an Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator? Pressure should be in the low 40s with Vacuum line off (depending on chip).
What about Injectors and Chip? Was the chip burned for the Injectors? What chip is it?
Sometimes people buy cars with old Race chips still in the ECM.
 
There are is no check engine light. it was on about 2 weeks ago but the code it set was for the vss. ended up being because my speedo cable broke in half and speedometer was getting no reading. replaced the cable and the light hasnt come back on so far and my speedometer finally works for the first time since i got the car..
 
Yes, car has a adjustable fuel pressure regulator. i have precision 50# injectors and a turbo tweak chip. the mechanic who ordered them for me said he ordered a turbo tweak chip to match them. Not sure what kind of chip was in the car when i bought it. i have never seen the chip tho so im not sure if it really is a tt chip.. man this is soo frustrating. i really want to enjoy the car and its been nothing but problems for me. im already in the car 18k (doesnt include the purchase price) and i still have problems..everywhere i have gone says its something different, i can never get a truthful answer from these mechanics out here in la.. it seems like everyone is just out to rob u of ur money ::frown::
 
Have you tried a new o2 sensor? Denso 234-1001 have worked well for me.

Do you know where your TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) or IAC (Idle Air Control) settings are at?

What kind of MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor) and is it an original or part store replacement?
 
i havent tried a new o2 sensor but ill go buy one and put it on and see if it changes anything..this guy told me that i had a heated o2 sensor. im not sure where the tps or iac are set at. the person who did the work said he adjusted everything right. and the maf i believe is a original part ( not 100% sure tho).
 
its ok.. i dont mind the questions.. ur trying to help me out.. and i appreciate that. turbo lou wont help me..lol.. i went to his shop when i first got thge car to see if he could help me get it running and he kicked me out of his shop cuz he got frustrated and we couldnt get it running. now that the car looks good and is at least running i dont think he wanted me to come back.. so i havent reached out to him...

Yikes! Well hopefully someone in your area can help you out. Sounds like your GN is possessed. If you can figure out the answers to the other questions post them back on here. In the meantime save up for the Scanmaster. I think Vortex Buicks has a How-To on checking TPS with Multi Meter. Grey wire is 5volts.
 
yea it probablly is possesed. haha. hopefully i can start to figure it out or meet someone to help me go thru this car. im deffinetly going to save for a scanmaster and as soon as i get one ill post the readings.. thanks for taking the time to try and help me out. i appreciate it..
