Hello all,
I don't know if this is the best venue for these questions but, I can't find another smog tech forum. So please excuse me if this seems off color.
My father-in-law is a smog tech with his own shop. He has terminal cancer. For some reason or another, he has put off making arrangements for selling the shop and/or equipment. Well, this thing has caught up to him over the weekend and he's in no shape to handle what needs to be done. Now his wife has the daunting task of selling things that she knows nothing about.
I'm hoping that somebody on this forum might know of an available resource we might use to aid us.
At one time my father-in-law had selling the shop in mind. Now, he either rents or leases so, I don't know how that would work. I'm thinking that we'll have to sell everything piecemeal.
Any help would be appreciated.

Not really the correct forum. I'll move it from smog tech to lounge, but not before I ask some questions. First off, I hope you and your family are at peace with the demise of your father-inlaw. Let me be the first in this community to extent prayers of hope for your family. Where is the shop located? Is the smog analyzer leases or owned? What about the shop equipment? Who hold the authority over the shop licenses?

smog shop

Thanks for your concern.
Well, as far as I know, he owns everything. Of course, he financed most of it and he's behind on some things. So I guess the bank will own everything soon enough. But we would like to avoid that, if possible.
The shop is in CA. I'm not real quick to give exact location because some car lots owe him and don't seem to want to pay up. So I would rather they didn't know the sutuation.
Not sure about your question regarding authority over license. The shop is a one man show with my wife helping out with reception and bookkeeping.
I guess we'll shoot for selling the equipment and hope for money left over for his wife.
I'm not trying to use this forum to sell anything. But I will need some sort of guidlines for asking prices as well as looking for buyers. I'll assume I should keep it local and run an ad or something.
Sorry for my ignorance.
And thanks for the help.

A commercial realty company should be able to assist you with selling the physical location. If smog checks are no longer being performed, then the licenses need to be surrendered to the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Additionally, submit a request for refund of unused smog certificates. The state will refund the value of unused certificates. You can probably sell or auction the equipment. If the buyer decides to open another repair facility, maybe the equipment can go with the sale of the physical building. That is a start.
