hey guys im just wondering
when your alternators go bad, do you guys generally replace it with the same exact one, or do you guys upgrade to a different model
the hot air car alts didnt put out as much as the 86 87 alts
can you use an alt off an intercooled car, or will it not work?
i know it uses a different belt and has a lil different pully on it
i'd like to get a 128 amp alt instead of the 94 amp stocker
any advice on which to go with? maybe some tips on what 2 try?

thanx alot guys
brian;)

Well d00d, you are right about one thing. The 84/5 alts use a different pulley to the 86/7's, as the intercooled cars use the serpentine belt setup, and we use V belts. The 86/7 altenator's amps are 120 not 128 I believe, and the 84/5's are 94. There is not too much difference in amps there. And I guess it depends on what you wanted to do. If you are running all the regular stuff, then that altenator should be more then ample for what you're doing. I replaced mine with an identical 94 amp altenator, and I all power options and a system, and have never had a problem with it.. So the stock unit should be good! HTH

no no no no

in general, alternators do not "GO BAD"

parts inside them go bad, take it to a shop with a free checkout and they will be able to put it on a bench and tell you what went wrong. then goto your local auto parts store, find the HELP! kit for your alternator, and fix it for $5-15

dont ever just buy a new alternator unless the windings are coming apart, which is rare....

those kits include bearings, regulators, and diode trees, also new springs and brushes. if you dont know how to rebuild an alternator, just look at it, it is very straightforward. you will need a nut driver and a toothpick/paperclip to fix one, very very easy.
