I was talking to a turbo vendor today, that told me the old 60-1(59mm) wheel will make more power, and flow more than a new 61mm Garrett "GT" wheel. Is that possible? I have had a PT-61, and a TA-61, and hands down the PT-61 was quicker and faster.
Do different vendors have different feelings about the potential of the 61 wheel? I am truly confused by his thinking on this.
I am looking to get a TE-34 rebuilt to something larger. But, the old 59mm wheel will make this a TE-60 turbo. I would believe the 61mm wheel would be stronger even with keeping the same exhaust wheel as the turbo has now.
Thanks...Brian

there's no way a 60-1 wheel makes more horsepower than a GT 61...plain and simple...the 61 wheel is ALOT more efficient too, i don't think a 60-1 turbo or equivelant can do 500 to the tires like a 61 can...

:D I think these threads are funny ...this one about gt stuff and the other one about gtq70's slowing cars down over old p-trim 70's

dont you'll remember that rap song ...."dont believe the hype"

basically they tossed out something new claimed it to be best thing since thongs were invented and people flock to buy the new stuff

$ in their pockets and no more performance or a product that hasent been long term tested

Well the track will be the proof, two back to back passes, gtq vs p trim. Stay tuned!

Norbs, you have found that your particular combination can not utilize the more efficent turbo, not it makes more power. I'd bet a 88MM turbo would make less than the P trim 70, is it fair to say it is also junk?

Then again maybe they forgot to send him the special Felpro program to go along with it so he can get that extra HP. ;)

Nope.

I am not saying that the turbo is junk, just stating that on my car with stock headers and ported iron heads i am not seeing any increase in power and a good friend of mine ken seggie of national performance has done the same swap with iron heads and picked up nothing also. From my mph i have seen it drop with the gtq, so something is not right.

I say that the engine just does not move enough air to use the 71Q effectively.

Put some M&As on there and get a good sized cam, and spin it to 6K+ and I am sure that it will make more power.

Run both turbos at 28 to 30 psi and post your findings. I could not make good power unless I was above 28 psi with iron heads.

GT61

I just completed my own test of the GT61. I previously had a TA49 turbo on my 3.8 stock block with a 206 cam and ported heads, stock headers. At 20-21 psi the best run that I could achieve was a 12.49 at 108 mph the car would consistantly run this number. I changed only the turbo and the boost was set to 20-21 psi the first run was a 12.09 and the second run with a better track and 60 ft was 11.991 at 114.86. I can tell by the butt dyno that this turbo is making alot more power at the top end of the track. I have achieved my goal and run in the elevens with 20 psi of boost, and I feel that I owe it to the GT turbo.

P.S. these runs were with a 3000 stall lockup convertor, but I do not lock the convertor in third gear. Stock trans with a shift kit and 100000 miles on it keeps me from locking up (afraid to break it):D

i call bullsh!t on that statment. your not afraid!

The 61 is ALOT more turbo than a 49 so I wouldn't attribute all your gains to it being a the GT wheel. A GT-61 vs. standard 61 would tell the difference.
