Hey all! I recently became the proud owner of an 87 GN hardtop. 80k miles, has a Hooker catback, adjustable wastegate set to 16psi, TPS-tec, and a drop-in K&N.

My car runs smoothly but has developed the cold-start idle surge. It'll range from <1000rpm to over 2000rpm. When it goes low it acts like it's going to stall, then the ECU kicks it up to over 2 grand. I figure it's the IAC, since I drove the GN on a 700mi roadtrip that was very dirty and dusty. Thing is, I can't find in my Chilton's how to remove it. I know where it is, but what's the procedure for taking it out and cleaning it?

Also, my car sometimes has a hard time starting...meaning it'll take 1-2 seconds of cranking before firing up. Is this a TB thing or what?

Thanks for your help!

Ground the diagnostic link (A and B of the ALDL), turn the ignition key to on position, engine off. Wait about 10 seconds and turn the ignition to the off position. Remove the 4 wire connector from the IAC and using a socket or appropriate size wrench, remove the IAC. Clean the port leading up to the IAC and the area around the throttle body (have to remove the uppipe) with carb cleaner. Reinstall the IAC, but leave the 4 wire connector disconnected. Turn the ignition key to on position, engine off and verify the TPS is set between 0.42-0.45 volts. If not, adjust the TPS. If the TPS is within range, then start the engine and let it idle. You may need someone to help you, or you'll have to raise the idle speed if the engine dies. Choke the wheels and put the gear selector into drive and set the idle speed to 450rpm in drive. This is the minimum idle setting. Now, turn the engine off, connect the IAC 4 wire connector, remove the ground between the diagnostic link (A and B), and start the engine. It should idle smooth. If you have a scan tool, try setting you IAC to 20 or less while the engine idles in either Park or Neutral and try to keep the TPS setting between 0.42-0.45 volts.

LOL, Hammer and LMFAO, I don't know what your dialog is about, but this is the General Turbo Buick Tech section that is meant to assist members with issues that are technical in nature. If you don't have anything to contribute to assisting this member, then you need to move your conversation elsewhere (such as the Lounge).

Thanks gofst, now I just gotta find a voltmeter! Don't think I'm stupid (I'm just new) but what should I ground the link with? Just some scrap wire?

As stated by "Just a Six??", put a paper clip between pin postions A and B on the ALDL and while the lights are flashing, it will seat the IAC
