DON'T Need a Fuel Pump!!!!

Aloha! New to HI with my 87 GN daily driver, but my Fuel Pump died today. Has a hot-wired Walbro 340 and want to replace it with another. No time nor space to work on it, so need recommendations on a shop to take it to. Any suggestions?

Are you sure it's the pump??? I just had a relay go bad on me. In fact that's the 3rd relay on the car to go bad in 6 months (vaious things). It could also be a couple other problems (ignition module, oil pressure switch, ECM, etc.). But if it is the pump, I can't recommend any shops here. I will NEVER let a shop touch my car again here. I took it to a shop a couple years back to get a sticker and the brakes done. The wife went somewhere later in the day and saw the mechanics behind the building doing burnouts with the car. I was FURIOUS. And then they didn't even do the brakes but charged me for them (I had a galled lug nut that I couldn't get off that was STILL galled and stuck after they supposedly did the brakes).

What Derrick say is something easy to do and check, but here's some shops with some good reputation with TR's..........

Okuhara's Machine shop on Queen street.....I take my car there if there is jobs I can't do.

Dillingham auto in Kalihi......They are very reputable with TR's but heard they charge more than other shops.

Masaki's auto repair......They also work on many TR's with also with the owner use to own a TR.

Pretty sure it's the pump...

Derrick,
Not 100% sure it's the Pump, but the pressure guage that normally rockets to 41psi was wavering yesterday & I could hear the pump stuttering. It slowly came up & the beast started, but later there was no pressure, and no lightoff. I will trouble shoot today, beginning with the relay... Thanks!

Thanks!

Well, if I can't fix it quick, I'll call the places you recommended. Thanks for the scoop!

I took my car to Masaki's several years ago before I knew anything about TRs. I called him because there was a GN parked in his lot. He said he owned a GN in the past and knew how they worked. One day my car died and I spent a lot of money changing out the coil and ignition module (big bucks on an '85). I remember him showing me a coil and saying how the inside was all melted. Looking at the coil, it wasn't even the one from my car! After all of this, he found that the crank sensor was bad.

Another time I took my car there to have the brakes done. After driving around for awhile my brakes would start grabbing by themselves. Took it back several times but they couldn't find the problem and I suspect they didn't believe me. One day I was driving down the freeway and the brakes were grabbing really hard. When I came down the off ramp my front brakes were billowing clouds of smoke. Turns out the brake pedal was getting caught on the brake switch so the pedal was always slightly depressed.

I would rather crush my car than take it to Masaki's but he is a really nice guy.

Sorry, I thought I posted where it was. It was the damn shop on Barber's Point NAS when they were still there. This is the same place that wouldn't pass me on an inspection because of a chip in my window. I called and had a guy come and fix it, and the fix is worse that the chip. But I showed the reciept for the repair to the IDIOT at the shop and he had to accept it. He also hit me because one of my high beams had some condensation in it. The light still worked great and everything. That's when I learned the hard way to NEVER bring a car to an auto shop on a military base for an inspection sticker! Unfortunately though I didn't find out about the burnouts behind the building until that night when the wife told me. And didn't confirm that they didn't touch the brakes for a few more days after that when I took the wheel off to do something else and found the lug was still galled!

Shop to avoid.

Whatever you do, don't go to Brake Service and Supply located on Beretania St.! I took my car to this place to have the brakes rechecked, after Greg took it to them about two times prior to me buying the car.

This was all within a short period of time (about two months). When I picked up the car, I noticed my alky setting was turned up all the way, and the car had a loud knock coming from the bottom of the engine. That's the reason for the rebuild that I didn't want to do so prematurely!

What gets me is the car didn't knock prior to me taking it to them. They probably did the same thing to my car, as the other guys were doing to Derrick's car (abused it).

What makes it even worse is I lost my brakes on my way leaving the brake shop. The brake pedal became hard like it was when I took it in, and the car wouldn't stop for ****. Needless to say, I was pissed!

Since then, I don't trust anyone with the GN anymore. The bottom line is most of the mechanics know nothing about these cars, yet they charge us big bucks for the "repairs" (DAMAGE) that they do to it. This guy was really nice too, but his workers are the ones that most likely abused it on the test drive.

Wow! I've had enough troubles on my own, that I knew better than to walk blindly into any old shop with the GN, so thanks for all of the input.

I've ruled out the relay, so I think I'll spend this weekend or next dropping the tank and putting in a new Walbro...I'll let ya know how it goes.

Thanks for the help!

I second that!!! I went there to get an estimate on a line lock install. And the guy I talked to didn't know what a line lock was???  But he was a nice guy :p So? where do we take our TRs to get work done that we can't do ourself? I already know who to go to if I blow a HG;) :D Nice guy too.

WHO???????

New Headgasket Mechanic

Guy,

I think you're right for a change. :D(j/k) With Derek having five headgasket changes under his belt, he's probably got more experience than any mechanic on the island.

I know with all the "opportunities" (problems) I've had, I've learned alot by working on the car myself. However, like everything else, there's still alot more to learn.

Keith

Found the Problem!

The pump is fine! The Hot Wire kit went bad.

After I traced the wires to the hot-wire kit, I connected the factory connectors and the pump works like a champ (I know - I should've started there). $50.00 for a new kit and 15 minutes sure beats $150.00 and several hours on the garage floor, though!

Thanks for all the replies. If (when) I get into bigger trouble, I'll keep note of the shops you mentioned.

Good find Ronnie!!

Glad to hear that you found the problem. Who wouldve guessed it would be a bad wire in the hotwire kit? I guess it depends on where you route it, i.e. close to moving or hot car parts etc.

Hey Keith,
Youre right about learning more things by working on your own car. The most experience with headgasket changes?????? I hope not!!! haha. It gets easier when you do it a lot. One thing I learned is to ALWAYS do it right the FIRST time and youll have less problems later.

Guy,
It would take a lot of performance car parts to get me to change another headgasket for someone!!! J/K haha. well.........
