1987 Grand National.jpgbuick power 002.jpgHey guys, I am new to owning a turbo Buick. I had a problem with the T/A 66 turbo when we rebuilt the motor. I might have to replace the turbo, What would work the best for my set up. I have a 218/212 roller cam, 109 block, PTC 9.5 2800-3200. I posted my full rebuild in a post called What to expect from my new motor. I hear about all kinds of turbos, and also what should I excpect to pay, they seem to vary in price. I thank anyone who replys in advance.

That is a loaded question.

You need to clearly define an ET goal.

Pump gas? Race gas? Pump gas and alky?

90% street / 10% strip? The amount you street drive it might influence which turbo would be better.

Your converter stall rating also directly impacts which turbo one might recommend. In your case, I would not let the converter stall you have now limit your turbo choices. Depending in your goals, you might should just plan on a restall if your goals lead you to a certain size turbo......

Do you know what your converter actually stalls brake building say 0-1 psi boost?

406,
10.80-11.50s is my goal in a ET goal. Its going to run on pump gas and alky
Those percent numbers are right on 90% street 10% track.. The last question I dnt know, the turbo had to be sent out within the first 5 minutes of starting the car, so the car is down at the moment.
I hope that helps.

I'd recommend a Precision billet 62 bb turbo. If you had a little more stall.... then maybe the journal bearing would be OK and save some $$. The new 6266 ought to be good for bottom 10's when pushed fairly hard with the right parts on an iron headed motor..... with that said, 10.80's should be doable on less than 25 psi boost..... and the dualBB should spoolup nice on the street if your converter will go to 3200.

If that is not in the budget.... an old school TE44 would have 10 sec potential and it should spool real nice with your converter. It will have to be pushed harder than the 62 to get 10.80's but still a capable turbo on the cheap.

I've got a T04s 60-1, a to4e 60-1 small shaft, and a 6069 (precision PT54) if you're interested. All will run the number.

I have the exact setup and had the same goals in mind. Only difference is mine is stroked (doesent really mean anything). I went with the PTE 6265 DBB. It's a beast on the streets and I've ran the time in my sig at the track. I'm positive that it will run 11.5x at 18psi. 93oct no alky. 20~22 psi spraying alky or q16 I think it will be in the 10.8x or slower. Like what was mentioned above they all will get it done. Some just may require running more boost. Good luck!

Here are the runs made that day, so you can actually see the combo in action:

Both runs were leaving off a trans brake but was not needed due to the type of stall you and I have.

What's stopping you from repairing your turbo?

Damn that is either a big cam for your goals or my cam is to small for the same goal 206/210 want a 210/215 I think.

Neither one of those cams will stop you from getting into the mid 10's or faster.

I ran 11.20's @ 120 plus with the 6265 DBB Billet wheel on a totaly stock long block, 100 unleaded fuel, 80 lb injectors, 70 mm TB, TA headers, SLIC, 3200 Edge Conv. 3780 lb car with a driver. Car was built by GN'S NW in Everett.

Type6,
The the 66 is being fixed, I just am afraid the turbo will have anthr problem.. Once this car is complete and I take it home if it breaks its on me.. I was just thinking maybe I should use something else... The 66 was expensive from what guys tell me turbos go for.

There is nothing wrong with the 66. I believe it to be similar to the very popular TE45-A except with the bolt on inlet bell making it more stock appearing. I do think to take advantage of the 66 you will need a converter that would stall around 3500 - 3600 RPM @ 0-1 psi boost to make it spool decently. Also the 66 is a mid 10 sec turbo.

IMHO, with your current converter, 90% street use, and your ET goals, I think you would be happier with a smaller and quicker spooling turbo..... hence most peoples recommendation(s).
