Hey guys, quick question. My car is stock except for basic bolt-ons like duel hooker exhaust. Never been to the strip and never will. Street car. I'm looking for an upgrade for my stock turbo. Just a bolt-on. No stall convertor changes. What can you folks recommend? Thanks

What is the difference between the two? How much more performance are we talking about over stock?

Both are average mid 11 second turbos if you know what you are doing. The TE44 will take it a little further than that. The stock turbo can put you in the low 12's I think.

Nix

If your never racing it then just keep the stocker. No sense in upgrading if your not going to shoot for a number. If you want the best performance for a stocker consentrate on good tune fresh plugs/wires, fuel filter, hot wire kit, stuff like that, oh and a Turbo Tweak chip. Don't forget a scanmaster too. Alky for later if you get the speed bug.

X2 I would do a Duttwieler neck on the ic also

There's no sence in upgrading if there is nothing wrong with the stocker. If you do upgrade, anything bigger than stock will be a little lazy with the stock D5 converter. A friend of mine runs a stock turbo with a restalled D5 and run high 11's. If you want to go faster there are plenty of other things that can be done before you upgrade the turbo. You have to remember that it's not one bolt on part that makes these cars fast it's the complete combo ( turbo, converter, injectors, heads, cam, intercooler, ect...) and "Tune" that does. Also we need more info on what upgrades have been done so we can point you in the right direction.

x2 on keeping the stock turbo.. at least for now. If you start modifying definitely do all of your fuel system upgrades first. Fuel pump, hotwire, adjustable regulator, fuel injectors and turbo tweak chip combo. Then maybe think about a 3" downpipe. A bigger turbo on a stock vehicle would be a waste of money in my opinion. Upgrading my turbo is still way down my list of priorities.

If the turbo is good and doesn't need to be replaced, take this opportunity to learn how to tune, installing the nescessary items for getting the best out of your combo. You'll find it very rewarding in the end. The hot-wire kit is the first item to consider along w/a tuning tool like the scan-master. A TT chip and a K&N filter can make a big differance even w/a stock turbo. Many parts can be had in the parts for sale section and it will save you a bunch. You can also check the gn car clubs in your area and ask for help. If possible, they will lend a hand.

Thanks for all the advise guys. I've done a ton of work to get my car running perfect. Ive done the suspension,Moog and K.Y.B . Scanmaster, new plugs and wires,Coil although not install yet. K&N air filter, fuel filter, breather bypass from Kirban.Got rid of my powermaster and did a whole vacuum conversion. New rotors and all new pads.Duel Hooker Header Exhaust and I just bought a new drivers side header because I couldn't stand a small ticking. I'm sure there is a ton of little things I forgot .... OHH New T.P.S and I.A.C. Man I can go on forever and I only had it for a little over a year. Wife wants me dead I think. My food is starting to taste funny.o_O Now its time for a little more performance items. Thanks for all the advise.

I would first work on the fuel system upgrades.

X2. A hot wire kit, a good in tank pump, adjustable fuel pressure regulator and maybe 42lbs or 60lbs injectors with a Turbo Tweak street chip will get it done. Also change the fuel filter.

I would beef up the fuel system and get an ALKY kit, then your ready to turn up the boost a bit.

You guys have been a great help.. Thanks.I'll hold off on the new turbo for a while. I think the next step with all your advise is a hotwire kit and a new fuel pump. Adjustable fuel pressure regulator and new injectors and chip from brian for Turbo tweek. See where that takes me. After that I'll need lessons on tuning. Questions will follow. Thanks again.

Run the stock turbo and spend money on the fuel system, alky, and trans work if you havent already. Spending the $ where you will feel it most and get reliability out of it is most Important.
