Ok. I've been searching and I can't find any real definative answer. A friend of mine has a custom made (by a muffler shop) 3" downpipe that he's willing to sell to me cheap. but he has an '86 GN . . . I have an '85 "hot air" T-type. Will it fit? It is still on his car (someone rearended him, totaled, bent frame). I havn't gotten over there to look at it to see if it will fit... i can't remember where his turbo sits in his engine bay so that's why i've been searching and now asking...

Thanx,

It won't fit, the turbo on the '86 is mounted in front of the engine as opposed to on top of the engine like we have. Your best bet would be an ATR or Mease downpipe if you are looking to upgrade. They both work pretty well, the Mease is a little more fancy and nicer overall, but hard to find.

Sorry T-Typed, the 86 87 turbo was mounted on the front of the motor for the intercooled set up. The down pipe will not fit, due to the reason not only because the turbo is on the front, but that the turbo is actually "clocked" or twisted differently into the intake. If you are in search of an aftermarket DP on the larger side, ATR i believe sells an entire kit for the Hot Air cars, and they are a little on the pricey side.

Other than that, MEASE performance in NJ might have a few pipes left which mount directly to the turbo, eliminating that elbow on your turbo. They are a tight fit, but they are 3" and look real nice. Lee Thompson used to have a few of his own 3" pipes, but last time I talked with him, he said he was all out....With Lee's pipe, you needed to buy an external gate, because his eliminated the puck inside the elbow (eliminated the elbow completely), and the Mease pipe has the puck integrated like the stock elbow.

Other thank that, it is a little difficult to find a manufacturer of our DP's because it is a lot of bending and very limited space. Good luck with whatever you decide!

John

thanx

Oh well, you know I fidured that it would be difficult... I may have to look into having a Muffler shop mandrel bend a custon downpipe... I DO infact have an arc welder... i may try to buy a few madrel bends from jc whitney and weld them together...

IMO, if you're going to spend the money on a DP, get one that eliminates the factory elbow. I went from a 2.5" KB DP with a ported factory elbow to a LT 3" elbowless DP and there was an immediate difference in spool and power, more than I thought there would be. Mease makes/made one that looked pretty nice.

Give Brian weaver (gbodyparts.com) a call 1-410-285-3740 , he just picked up three for stock on the hotair pipes. The ones we sent to brian were ceramicoated, so they will cost more $$ than the uncoated versions.

good luck!
