 When in 1st manualy I have engine brakeing so as I let up on the gas the car slows and when I get on the gas the car goes. When in auto, car starts to go and if I let up on the gas it slows but when I give it gas it will not pull until the rpms get back to where they were when I let off the gas. This only happens in 1st gear. Is this normal? Everything else is fine with the trans.

Yes no engine braking unless in manual LO.
Same if shifter is in OD & trans in 3rd no braking.

So on my shift indicator 3 is drive and D would be OD? This is in a 66 el camino and the shift indicator is as follows, P, R, N, D, 3, 2, 1. My lock up is a toggle with led on dash.

don't know about a 66 el camino--------but in a gn 3 is Drive which gives three gears with braking and OD is overdrive which gives 4 gears without engine braking...........RC

Car sounds like its been retrofitted with a 700r4 or a 200r4 (like in the gn). Thats a great thing (except for weakness/quirkiness of od's). Either way, youll have what they described above...and that goes for any other automatic.

Yes the car (el camino) is retro fitted with a 200r4 and a 95 LT1. Been this way for 4 years now. When in 3rd I have engine brakeing in 3rd and 2nd but not in first. I have the CK valve body governor kit with the billit servo set up for 373 gears but have not had a chance to install the rear gears yet so I'm still using the 308's. Right now it's an annoyance because it doesn't shift to 2nd until 25 mph. Thanks for all the friendly support, Don

Im not familiar with the CK kit, but it can be hell making a retro time out right. I do remember that free-wheeling feeling if the 1-2 shift is delayed. Im not sure what u mean in last post vs 1st post as to when it is giving problem. You can affect the shift timming with a few clicks of the TV cable. But be careful , dont want to back it off much or itll fry trans from low pressure.

The problem or the annoyance is when I come home. I live on a hill and the main street is a 25mph zone. Being the shift is at 25 mph in first, when I let up on the gas and then give it gas it will not pull until I get back to the same rpms as when I let off the gas. I am assumeing that this will go away when I change the rear gears.

I hear ya, that lack of overrun is normal...you just notice it when shift timing is delayed like that. The good ole vacuum modulated trans never did that, theyd notice the back off of throttle and dump the shift. YOu could adj tv cable out alittle, but to changethe shift timing for the present gears would require a gov spring change. The new gears will cause 2nd to dump sooner. That is some rad gears you have ready Id prefer 3;45 at most. good luck
PS Id keep the present gears and spend the money in a mild street Edge convertor, they guarantee .4 tenths and i tried one in my lt-1 caprice, it was incredible for just a tc change.I dont mean to preach, sorry.

So tell me more, Should I change the govenor spring back to a stock spring or just replace the govenor with the stock one and are the govenor gears interchangable. Thanks , Don

What VB 25 mph seems high even with 3.08's. TV too tight, plunger spring maybe too long.
Where does the 2-3 come in at?

Valve body is from CK performance, 1st to 2nd @ 25+ 2nd to 3rd @ 35.
1-2 shift firm but not too firm 2-3 shift smooth 3-4 shift can't really feel it but it's there.

i think this is normal with many type of cars. have heard about it lot of time. this is to be compromised with dual
