Anyone know how hard it is to take the ignition lock cyclinder out of an 86 Thunderchicken?
Guy at work gave me one that needs heads (302) but he cant find the keys, just the title.
Thanks

Follow me if you will.

Get a Screwdriver, and a REALLY big hammer........

:D

Sorry, I don't know.

Maybe a dealer can cut you a key if you take them the VIN. Either that or practice taking out of a yard car.

Later,

Steve.

If you know someone in the repossession business, and the car is untouched (door panel and trunk area), that person has knowledge of the key code sticker locations. He/she can use the factory key code to cut you another key. Or as someone posted earlier, contact the dealer.

I don't think that they were keeping records of the key cuts back in 86... I don't think that started until the early 90's.

I am sure that it will be a real pain if you do not get it to turn. Most ignitions require them to be in the "on" position to be removed

I would say a locksmith, do you have AAA? We got robbed here in Miami on the beach and lost everything - including our car keys. AAA sent out a guy that slim jimmed our door and went through a box of dealer cut keys, and finally found one that worked. When he got it to work he swapped out the ignitions and gave us the keys to the new ignition. That was on a 93 exploder...

I would imagine during normal hours a locksmith would charge in the neighborhood of 40 bucks

Good luck

I can only get you key codes from 93 and up. PM me and I can fax you Ford Shop manual.

thanks for all the replies, even the hammer and screwdriver one...lol I will just pull the steering column and take it into the locksmith. Save me a service call charge anyway. :D

I'm in the used car business...and here is a secret...There are "try out" key sets available for Ford Cars...They are 2 sided keys, with each side cut different...comes as a set,of about 50 keys///you keep trying keys until one fits..then copy that side..most locksmiths have a set,or try a locksmith supply..a ford lock won't come out of the columm with out being in the unlock position first...
