a trans with a non lockup can be converted back to run with a lockup converter , theres some mods made to the tranny to allow a non lockup converter to work and this needs to be changed back to allow a lockup converter to be installed , but even after the mod to the trans to return it to lockup the converter will also need to be lockup unit

i suppose its possible to take a non lockup converter and open it up and install clutch pack to make it lockup but the rebuild would be the same as if you were rebuilding a lockup converter , but you would need the internal parts and possiblbly a new front cover and i dont think it would be cost effective , better to sell the non lockup to someone looking for one and purchase a lockup converter

ok so if I put a non l/u converter in my gn will anything have to be changed?

= ,
if your trans is setup for a lockup converter (as stock would be ) and you want to go to nonlock converter the trans needs to be modified for it

ok so if I have a non l/u converter can I send it back to art carr and have it made into a l/u?

You will need to remove the non lock up valve from the pump. May be an Art Carr, or a Trans Go kit, and replace with a lock up valve. Also, you will need a seal for the input shaft. You do not need the check ball in the end.
Also, you will need a lock up solenoid, and correct plug in the trans, and 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches for GN use.
