I spending a good buck on the new build so that I wont have to do it again anytime soon. 109 block, Eagle crank, steel caps, Buick Motorsports Rods, JE pistons and so on. After reading a few horror stories about thrust bearings and what not, Im a little concerned about the machine shop making a costly mistake. Can anyone direct me to some sort of checklist that I can go over with the Machine shop to avoid a potential disaster. The machine shop is trusted by a lot of people around here, and I myself have not heard anything bad about their work, but Im not sure how many Buick motors they have assembled like this? Any help?

You first said I am "spending" then you go on to say "assembled"???

You could give a machine shop a set of specs but that means nothing if they don't follow them. They have to have built Buick motors.

Agree with gnxtc2...I had my machine work done at a shop that has done 109 blocks...they are by no means experts so I gave them a fairly detailed build sheet with everything I wanted done...clearances...what pistons to use...orientation of rods...torque specs...etc...and guess what...they still screwed a couple of things up...I purchased some T/A cam bearings and specifically put on the sheet to install tham with the oil holes at 3 and 7 O' clock positions...I even explained it to the guy taking the info...well when I pick the block up I looked at the cam bearings and the holes weren't clocked the way I told them to...they were all over the place...so I made them pay for a new set of bearings and do it right...the other thing was the cam gallery plugs...I had a screw in type set from T/A...which they didn't use...they put some standard plugs in there which were too long and blocked the oil path...so I had to get that fixed...I guess I didn't get detailed enough on my build sheet...I've attached the sheet I gave them...

Hey rabbit, long time no see! I think the FIRST question to the mach. shop should have been, " how many turbo buick 3.8 " motors have you done? A very good freind of mine went through 4 motors before having it built by (Mark Thomas) aka "puddin". Now with puddins motor in the car he has put more miles on it than ALL the other motors combined... If your interested in having him do your motor e-mail me. but the bad part is you would have to bring your motor down to Tennessee... The GOOD part is when you got it back you can sleep at night!!! knowing that it's done right... He's doing a stage 1 motor right now that i'm helping him with.... let me know

thumbsup on the machineshop sheet.

build sheet

Guy's this was the build sheet for MSDGN's car, This build sheet worked for just what MSDGN was needing done. This build sheet is not something that everyone should go by. Every build is different due to the Blocks, pistons, bore, and so on. So by all means don't just use this build sheet on your motor. talk to a VERY reputable engine builder first before you do anything.
just my 0.02 worth.

Sorry to hijack this thread but what do you guys think of Jaspers engine and transmission rebuilding? Do they do a good job from what you have seen?

jaspers

I myself have heard nothing about jaspers buick engines or the tranys. If your going through the trouble of re-building your motor and or trans. you might as well spend a little more and have it done right the first time by someone that you KNOW for sure is very reputable and good at what they do... scot w.

Sorry to hijack this thread too... but who would you use in AZ if you had to do it again? Thanks.

I agree with scot w. in that the build sheet I attached shouldn't be used asis...it's just an example of what information you might want to provide for the machine shop...it worked for me but I would probably be more detailed on the next one...I also agree talking to reputable builders is a good idea...I built my engine myself but that was after 2 years of research and talking to a lot of engine builders to get ideas on what parts to use...tips and tricks when building...etc...I also used the Buick board resources...

Thanx For The Thoughts

I will take the posted list along with a few other bits of info I found to the machine shop on Monday. Hopefully the assembly is consistent with the #s I have. Scot thanx for the offer (about ur builder) but I know these guys will stand behind their work in the event something goes wrong. And please dont apoligize nobodys hijacking ---just discussing ;) . Go Bears and bring on the Panthers!!
