O2 sensor...what's the trick for removing it

I need to replace my O2 sensor (bad emissions test today, O2 of unknown age and condition).
I have an O2 socket, but can't seem to find the "easy" way to remove the thing without removing heater hoses and God knows what else...
Is there a trick?
This is on an '87.
Thanks,
Jeff
The BIG time newbie

usually you can put a 22mm long box end on it after you take the shield off....have to unplug it, of course....bit of a pain but not bad if it is relatively cold. :)

Box wrench is all it takes. Remove the single wire connector first and use the wire to your advantage: use one hand to twist it in the 'off' direction. I hate to have the wire fighting against me. You will not have a lot of room, just enough to get a partial turn, flip the wrench over, get another partial turn, etc. Until you can start turning it by hand.

thanks guys!
On a separate note...having a minor crisis with my "'87 GN".
Where can I find the VIN on the engine block to verify it's originality?
Sorry to post this question here...I have it in the Stolen VIN section but really want a fast answer...I'm concerned about my "new" car...
Thanks,
Jeff
