Getting an odd noise when I kill the motor

Any ideas?

How long has the car been doing that? Sounds like the starter is engaged or engaging. Either that or a bearing is going bad in something but you would think it would be making that noise while it is running. Doesn't sound good whatever it is. Where is the sound coming from?

I just got the car back together from a front cover/oil-pan removal. It could be the starter as I replaced it with a new gear reduction unit when I put the car back together. The original did not use a shim so I didn't put one in should I have?

The sound seems to be on that side of the car.

put a washer on each starter bolt and re check, easy enough...

I have the shim that came with it... at least this starter doesn't weigh a ton!

Remove the serpentine belt. That will tell you if it's external.

That's sounds bad!! Check the turbo. Also could be something in the transmission. I had a 700r4 in my cutlass that made a similar noise when it fried. Sounds like something is spinning and fast.

New trans, that shifts good. I checked the fans. It only seems to do it when the car is cold. I took it around the block today and everything seems to run fine. The motor has stopped moving before the sound stops.

Since you just dropped the oil pan it sounds like the torque convertor cover hitting the fly wheel.

Have somebody start and stop the car while you narrow down where it is coming from. Remove the pipe from the turbo inlet and watch the blades

I believe the starter is the correct unit. It has no issues starting the car. Turbo looks like it is spinning fine, it is still is spinning after the noise stops. That says starter to me.

I have the inspection cover off now. I'm going to try it again tomorrow as it only showed up when the car was cold.

Try giving the motor a little rev before killing an see if sound changes,See if goes longer or stays the same, Almost sounds pressure related. Your motor sure is violent when shuts it off ,it almost diesels

Put the car on jack stands and have some one start the car and put your hand on the starter as the car shuts off. That is the best way to truly rule out the starter. It also give you another position to hear the growl and could possibly help you tell where the noise is originating from.

If the engine has completely stopped turn the only thing that could still be moving is the crankshaft fan since it has a clutch and the turbo. Since you said the turbo spins freely I would also check the crankshaft fan if your car still has it on there.
