Checked my radiator today after a fresh oil change and the cap was full of what looks like oily paste. It does not smell of oil. What should i check? I'll do a coolant flush tomorrow. Any tips on the best way to perform a thorough cleaning? I see no evidence of coolant in the oil.

It's on an 86 GN with 85K miles.

Possibly a leak in the tranny cooler in the radiator?

Is the paste pinkish/reddish? Have you checked the tranny fluid lately?

Steve. '87 GN.

Factory radiator? Oil cooler in rad? What kind of coolant? No coolant in oil?

paste on the cap

Hi,
Was the paste somewhat yellowish? I think this is the beginning of seepy headgaskets. There are other possibilities, but I think you are dealing with the beginning of a head gasket issue.

What about....

The trans cooler lines? do you have the transmission oil lines still going to the radiator? If so, check the tranny fluid.

Possibly the engine oil cooler is beginning to show it's age. I had to replace mine a couple of years back, for the same reason, oil appearing in the radiator.
