Hey guys, Just made a discovery that the TA headers will likely not be fitting with my aftermarket oversize oil pan??? Is it likely to remove the pan without removing the engine?? Its looking like a really tight fit! This car is beginning to frustrate me. Its probabally more the problem of the hack work on assembly from the past owner!

The stock pan will with a slight effort. You say an oversize pan. Does it have an extended pickup? If so you may have to unbolt the motormounts and jack the engine slightly. Maybe someone with first hand knowlege will chime in. Good Luck Jon Hanson

No experience with a aftermarket pan removal with engine in car.
But the stock pan will often time hit the crank throws and you have to barr the engine over to get them to clear and then it comes right out once the pickup is un bolted

Hey, mines hacked up to! I have the oil pan off with the engine in the car. I had to jack it up (as far up as I could get it) to get the pan off. The oil tray gets in the way and it gets caught up on the oil pick-up. It's a royal PITA. I have it out, I hope to have it back in tonight.

Headers vs Oilpan

. I've changed a few rear main seals and it's a chore but they were only stockers the 2nd time wasn't as bad as the 1st. Was wondering if you could give AZGN or RJC(assume you have Jason's pan) a call about compatability of their products before you tackle the pan. You maybe able to get it done without removing it , are you thinking of putting the stock pan in so the new headers fit? Would be nice to keep the deep pan if you could. They may have an idea or 2 that might work in getting the crossover to fit or moddifying crossover so you don't have to jack things up. Get ahold of them I'm sure they've dealt with a situation like this before heck it might just fit. There has got to be some options. If not having your welder make a new one or modify the TA crossover, also was wondering if you couldn't yourself cut the crossover and use some of that braided looking flex coupler from Summit might be enough to clear pan. Good luck hope you come up with a solution....

I have the RJC oil pan, and the TA headers fit just fine.

What pan do you have?

if you have an RJC pan it will come off much easier than even a stock pan with a pick up tube extension. It is very easy. just pull the bolts and slip it off.

we thought of this and designed the sump in the pan to aid in taking it on and off in the car.

hope this helps

Anybody have a picture of the RJC pan?

Does anybody have a picture of the RJC pan so I can see if that mey be whats there? Thanks, Ryan

both the stock pan and the RJC deep sump pan are easy to get with off with the engine in the car. sometimes you might have to turn the motor over alittle so the crank will clear the pan.

Thats definately not what is on the car now, Its more of a brake formed welded square sided pan with a flush allen drain plug in the center of the bottom, Ill post some pics tomorrow am to see if anybody can reconise it!! Thanks for all the info on this thread guys!!

I think Postons used to sell a sheetmetal oil pan. Remember it in the catalog but never saw one in person on a engine. Maybe give them a call

Oil Pan Pics

After looking closely at the pan im thinking that the headers and crossover should fit, Maybe a slight crossover mod but should be simple enough, Heres some pics of the pan, It looks different than I remembered so hopefully they will fit!!

Oilpan

That ain't a bad lookin oilpan , some decent welds looks like the fabricator who welded it together kept header/crossover clearence in mind as you can see the rear corners of the pan is angled not square, your TA headers should fit. What was the bung coming out the side of the pan used for a turbo oil return line or a connection for vacuum line . You can see the drain plug is on the bottom. Those TA's will be nice man.

Honestly the origional crossover pipe is still on the car, its literally 1/16 inch from the front of the trans pan!! Hooker headers are total GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!! I would not even give these headers to somebody and not have a bad feeling about it, these are going in the scrap barrel friday!! Check out this picture of these extremely high quality headers!! Lol;)

The previous owner actually flattened out the crossover pipe with a hammer to make it clear the trans pan, And honestly there have been no mods to the entire header system that looked to create that fitment problem, im honestly not certain how somebody could sell a header kit that does not fit the car it was intended for!?!?

Hooker headers

Alot of Buick folks tried Hooker headers years ago and took em' off alot more pipe in the crossover heard it took forever to spool up was a terrible design most wouldn't put em on their car if they were free. The original owner of our car had tried the Hooker headers and their ex/WG DP in the early 90s took the headers and crossover off almost immeadiately. They slowed the car down out of the hole and he went back to the stockers. Yeah in looking at your pic you could see the header/crossover exhaust flanges and they are still connected the Hooker crossover didn't even go near the oilpan almost out of the pic, the stock crossover goes across/over the area between oilpan and tranny/torque converter inspection plate. Probably an at least an extra foot of of un-needed tubing that caused all that turbo lag and loss of low end torque. Imagine that hammered out portion of that longer crossover helped the turbo to spool even slower.

So with the instalation of the new TA headers would it be wise to use header wrap on the lower portion of the crossover where it passes by the oil pan? Just curious because I have been having issues with oil and trans temps and im thinking its due to the crossover pipe with the trans and the oil partially due to the flange for the up pipe to the turbo which is literally resting on the oil pan!? Whata terrible design! Chech this picture out!!!

Headers

Probably wouldn't hurt, but instead of wrap maybe some type heat shield. Most wraps void header warranty. Some don't like putting wrap down under car, heard it said it traps dirt and moisture and could cause an enviroment that encourages premature rusting makes sense. Hate for your new headers to rust unless theyr'e SS even then they can get light surface rust if not maintained. Again I'd probably use a heat shield if you feel that's where your heat source is coming from. To get a better hold on oil temp and tranny fluid temp Do you now have external trans and oil coolers or are you using stock radiator setup? What TA headers did you get the Stainless or coated mild steel? With your new headers and cross over they may sit/fit in there differently and you may be able to infact adjust the position of the flanges so the crossover flange doesn't touch/rest on pan, actually there are no flanges a different type setup no bolts ,i.e clamps. Do the headers come with new hardware? Looking at your sig they upgraded alot of parts once you get everything ironed out she ought to run real hard.
