oil pump gears

I had an extra timing cover apart for a while now and have a question about the oil pump gear (without the shaft of course). it has a mark on one of the teeth, does it face up toward the water pump or down toward the ground? thanks

It faces up. The marks are visable when installed in the housing.

if the mark is visible, it would be installed with the mark facing down, correct?

the same mark is on the shafted gear. put em both on the same side.

I install them sideways. Actually I don't think it even matters. I also install then facing down (when in the car) because it seems the right thing to do, but it is a straight gear, so it shouldn't matter.

I dont even know why they have the dots? maybe for reference marks so they do go on the same side? Probably not a huge issue anyways.
