how hard is it to change the oil pump gasket. i mean is there any thing, i should be aware of when i take the pump apart just inst alled new timing chain on friends car thanks RR:D

Other than there are two hidden bolts under the oil filter/oil cooler adapter, it will come right off.

Hey, this is Mike, we met at the car show in Georgetown.

Pretty straight forward, like UNGN said, the two hidden bolts are the key. Check the oil pump housing for wear (both the removeable part and the pockets where the gears sit.) Don't use any sealant when putting it back together, the gaskets are thin because you need tight clearances between the housing and the end of the gears, around .002" They is also some casting flash on the housing, might as well remove it to smooth the oil passages.

hey guys thanks for the replys. it was nice to hear from you vin 7 wear will you be attending school at .

Go Vols! University of Tennessee

Not sure of the Turbo Regal scene there, I *think* there is an 1/8 mile track there. Bristol is not too far away, and that is a great track.

Did Mike get to those website's?

Later,
Mike

Be aware there is several different thickness gaskets and thats what controls the endplay. If you put to thick of gasket in you will have to much clearance and the oil presure will be low at a idle. I set mine at .001 end play and have been known to sand the gasket to just the right thickness to get .001:)

Hey this is some GOOD info, i bought my car after it was rebuilt and noticed LOW oil pressure at idle, it reads 10psi at idle, APPROX 1000 on tach...to me it seems low, could this be caused by incorrect clearance on the gasket, the motor was rebuilt before purchase and other than for that fact runs PERFECT...when at 2000 rpm it will read around 35 psi, so it is higher when i am in the peddle, any ideas,,,chqange the gasket, leave it alone???

It helps to keep the end play tight so it doesnt bleed off oil presure around the end of the gears. This is just one of many areas on the oiling system that can cause low idle oil presure. There is always other clearances that will do the same thing,Cam,lifter, rod, main all bleed off oil presure if there not right..
I have all my clearances tight and i have never seen it go below 25# hot.You can loose some idle oil presure if the end play is .005 or more:) It wouldnt hurt to check the end play in your pump just to know its right:D
