Ok, talk to me about the differences between a Scanmaster, Turbolink, etc...?

I'm looking into getting something for my GN, I know that it's definitely a must have, but I'm not sure which to get.
Scanmaster is handy because it just sits on the dash and you can use it while driving all the time. Cost-~$230-250, right?
Turbolink is a laptop program, right?
Advantages-it'll store info so you can make a pass then play it back, it's realtime, and updates faster.
How much does it cost for the program? I think I can get a laptop for free, but if the program costs as much as a SM2.1, then that pretty much makes that decision for me.
