Long story short as possible here. Leaving the old t66 turbo behind and upgrading to a 72mm ball bearing GTK850. Will my 10 year old ATR wastegate keep up?

if it worked good on your last turbo it should work good on the new one. But their are alot better wastegates out their now.

I fought with high boost and low boost issues with my old ATR gate. I upgraded to a TIAL 38mm and never looked back. Rock solid boost at whatever I set it at. Worth the $$

No it will not work. Those gates barely work with small turbos. Upgrade to a quality unit. Turbosmart, JGS or TIAL

Mine worked fine with my T-76 turbo and very steady at boost control on a 9.80 car without any fancy electronics. I know there are beter wastegates out there but if you want to save some money, it will probably work.

Key word "probably"

The fact that it worked for you is a rare occurence. As for the rest they will have issues with it.

TurboSmart is the way to go. Send us the pipe and we can probably retrofit a TurboSmart gate onto it for you.

Thanks for all the input fellas. Any1 else care to chime in? I have sent the ps header and crossover to Cottons for fab of a new DP and still have some time to make a decision. I am leaning on getting a new gate as I am wanting to step up to the next level with this car.

Ok, you did say it will not work. My data suggest that it may. So why not just try it ?

Turbo Britt,
You experience obviously varies from mine. I was making a point reference to your prior post. I hope that you are basing you opinion on more than using a ATR wastegate on just your car. I have attempted to make these work in the past on many cars including my own. I have had these even set away to get worked or back under warranty to ATR. They were built with below standard parts and poor design.

I have had good luck with my ATR ext gate. Granted my car is not that fast. High 10s. But I have had the gate since 1997 and had it rebuilt(seized) in 2002. I had it fixed by John Craig for $50 and it has been great. But I have also heard a lot of complaints about it. Maybe I got lucky .

Someday I would like to upgrade to a turbo smart/tial and a AMS 500 controller.

I had boost creep with my combo no matter what I did to it. Switched to Tial 38.

Believe me when I say that I wouldn't recomend it. I just stated that it would probably work. I know there are much beter gates out there and I'm sure that I will soon excede the capacity of mine. If it can work on mine, i can't see why it wouldnt work for anybody else. if you have had a defective gate, than that is obviously an issue. If this guy has one that works now, than why assume that it won't continue working?
