Hey guys I know it's been awhile but I finally got my block off the shelf . I will be going with some TA SE heads that I got a awesome deal on . I have some ATR headers , some single pass carallo 6.500 rods , a LA Billet crank 3.625 . I still need a ON Center intake manifold . And some custom Slugs . My bore is 4.055 what size pistions should I order ? . Ive been reading my Buick power source book trying to figure out what I have to plug up in the block . My lifter bores have been drilled and bushed . So I have to plug those up . And I believe since I'm going with a stock style front cover and duttwhiller pump do I have to leave the plugs out of the center of the lifter valley to help drain back to the pan?

I was told that bit used to machine out the grove some had 2 passes and some had single passes and that the singles where stronger

I believe you can see a small ridge with the dual pass instead of one smooth pass like mine

Unfortunately Kenny isn't going to be building my motor . That whole money thing is always getting in the way of my plans . So it looks like I will be going to be putting it together myself

Chris,

You need to know what compression ratio you're shooting for, what your combustion chamber volume is and what the deck height of your block is then get in touch with a piston mfg like JE or CP. FWIW you'll want to run something in the range of .005-006" piston to wall clearance if that helps. As far as which holes to plug it's true you need to plug the holes on the lifter valley side of the lifter bores and you do need oil drain back holes in the lifter valley so oil can migrate back to the pan. The Carrillo rods you have are the heavy duty version also.

yea he can't be cheap so I don't blame you.... but if u have no experience in building a TA motor I wud find someone that does. sure wud make an expensive boat anchor if it comes apart....

What should I be shooting for as far a compression ? Started measuring the mains and crank and will be setting the crank in soon to get my deck height which I believe is right around 9.530 . The holes are all at 4.055 . Still need to clean the block and re measure everything . Again I will be doing most of this on my own so please bare with me guys as I don't wana F**K this thing up

I'd suggest a compression ratio around 9 to 1.

So I picked up some TA SE heads with 1.75 rockers , a off center champion intake ,70mm throttle body short travel hydraulic lifters, hopefully when the time comes I'll be able to sell my off center intake and pick up a on center . Still need Pistons , bearings, oil pan with fittings and lines . What are you guys going with for bearings ? Mine is all standard size mains,rods and cam. What do I have to do to the lifter gallery? The bores have bronze liners installed with proper holes for oiling . Do I leave the holes down the center open to help the oil get back to the pan? . Thanks for the advice .

I would leave the holes in the valley for oil draining. I would check all the oil drilling for completeness since there are chances some may not intersect properly or may not be completely drilled. For bearings I run CB1398H Rods and 107M mains.

Here is the picture of what I'm talking about . I take it I do have to plug these holes in the lifter bore . I believe the holes closest to the center where used to drill into the oil feed for the lifter bores ? What is the proper size hole to supply enough oil to the lifter?

Mine had similar holes. On my block they were used to drill through the bore and into the opposite side to connect with the oil feed drilling. Once the lifter bushing is installed it blocked the hole so a threaded plug is not necessary and I would be afraid to install one since it can come loose and cause damage or possibly distort the lifter bore if the plug bottoms out on the bushing. If yours is done similar than I would leave it alone. If it has a hole drilled through it than you have to plug it. Again, mine had about a .030" hole to lube the lifter but if your running a hydraulic lifter I would think a larger hole would be necessary to keep the lifter refilled at high RPM. Keep in mind the oil hole needs to also line up with the oil band on the lifter to be of any use for a hydraulic lifter. Typically at this level you should be looking at running a solid anyway and just ditch the short travel lifters. Depending on the lobe profile you could run them on a hydraulic cam anyway.
