exhaust

Personal opinion here...

I like open exhaust when I am racing. Part of it is probably the loud sound that is pretty cool when you are winding it up - or even at idle (especially if you have some cam in the car). I also find that I can hear the car better, meaning that I can pick up on sounds that I might otherwise miss. That being said, I would not run open exhaust on "normal" roads unless I was going a short distance or knew the local police, etc... It is very loud and can draw quite a bit of attention.

From a purest sense, there is definitely something to be said for running "through the mufflers" - as some classes require this and you can say you are running that way.

Not sure if that helps.

I have from where the shell for my cat is 2 1/4in" all the way back and exiting behind the rear wheels at an angle in about 10" long 3 1/4" diam. tips with no mufflers or a cat at all. Its not even that loud without mufflers, and if you were to leave the cat on it will quiet it down a bit because my other GN has the same set up but without the gutted cat and it is pretty quiet. Id suggest just going without mufflers at all for the long run it will make your car run better since back pressure=bad for turbos.

Before I got my exhaust, I ran awhile out of the downpipe. (loud). Then I stuck a muffler on the downpipe (ultra flow straight through). Not bad still pretty loud. Then I put my y-pipe on with two mufflers but no tail pipes. It was still somewhat loud. When I added the tailpipes over the rear end, it made a huge difference. I think the tailpipe over the rear does more than the mufflers. There are several guys just running exhaust pipe without mufflers.

WHen I run with the dump open, it gives me a real bad headache after about 30 minutes. Sounds great but I can only handle a little bit of it. I would go and buy some cheap butt ones and be done with it till you are ready for the good ones.

*****Dunno where you are located but if you run your TR with open exhaust (even with a cat convertor) around here, you will get pulled over real quick. Even with the cat on, it's still really loud. Cops are cracking down on noise pollution around here as what sounds tolerable inside the car, sounds much louder from the outside.

Just get new mufflers as soon as possible, it's not worth the hassle of getting pulled over or harassed for something so easy to fix. When I ordered my Ultraflows from Summit, I got them in 2 days, and with free shipping for like $100 on sale.

As long as you run it all the way back and over the rear end then out it isnt really all that loud if you dont have a cat or mufflers. With the set up I have on my car it just has a nice mild tone to it wehn it idles and a nice rumble when you get on it.
