Does anyone have this original color on their GN. Mine has a goldish/bronze sparkle when seen in sunlight. I'm trying to find out if there are any others like this so I can get a correct paint code. My cowl tag says 19U which I believe is a none metalic black. I've had the GN since new, and the paint is original. Anyone? Thanks, Brian

I have heard that there was contamination of some sort when the cars were painted. I don't know if it was the paint itself or some sort of overspray but mine is the same way. In fact I can see many colors in mine-blue, red, green, gold. I'm pretty sure they are all like this & you will probably never match it.

you could also take it to your local paint supplier and have them take a picture of it ( not being a smart a$$ either) they can take a picture of it and it will give them a formula to mix by. i would go to some one that sell's ppg, dupont, glassurit, spies hecker or anything of good quality paint material. they should be able to help. the shop's i have worked at have had to do this a few times.

Thank you, that's a good option.

Here's a good site:

AutoColorLibrary Color Chip Selector

The paint code is on the crowl, if it's 19 then it's just black. Are you sure it hasn't been repainted?

I had a 89 Skylark, it was a matalic black. It would change colors in different lights. Look around that site above and take some numbers to your local paint supply, they should have chips that you can look at in person.

I ve heard some gns had this due to the fact that they did not clean the spray guns correctly after spraying gold color cars. thus sparkle contamination but not usually on all surfaces.-go figure.

Strange it is. It's difinitely not contamination, as it is uniform thru out the entire paint job.

Thanks for the link Rich. The car has difinitely not been repainted. I am the original owner. A few months after I took delivery, I recieved a letter and a $1500 GM credit to repaint the car. They stated that the first several GN's had been painted in the wrong color. Their must be others out there that have this metalic. Either way, I has to be a '86 color from some other GM vehicle. Guess I'll check the paint chip link.

My 87 GN has the same problem. When the sun hits it I can see this goldish sparkle in the paint, some time it looks like there is lint on the car but it is in the paint. The trunk has it more then the hood, the original owner told me that the car was never painted, I thought it was overpray on the car from someone painting or working in a garage. I was going to bring it to a body shop to have it rubbed out but now that I read this post I can see it is part of the paint.

Thanks,
Ray

The "metallic" black was very common in GN's built in mid-1987 and later. I bought one in the summer of 1987 and had an expert color sand and buff this car. The paint turned out awesome!

This was very different from a white T-Type I ordered in 1986, and was a December 1986 built car. This car had such a terrible paint job the dealer had to re-paint it, and after 20 years, it is due again.

I am the orginal owner of an 86 which was built in oct of 85 in flint, the front of the car is metalic because in the paint booths the cleaning of the spray lines was not that good so you have numeous combinations of paint, mine has silver in it.

DURACRYL was acrylic lacquer, hand rubbed looked awsome but yeah i dont think you can get it, the Gov put the slap on...Addition: called guy he can get it all day long ..but why he said..lol everyones gone 2 stage

Figures about the quality from cars made in Flint and if they jumped from pot to pot..oh boy sounds like you may have a one of a kind...good if its mint but I remember you saying it got smaked in the enclosed trailor and thats not good.

Good luck
Mike

You have to love 80's Quality Control, although 20 years later it's kind of cool.

The real culprit is the EPA, the automakers were trying to figure out how to comply with new stricter standards in a plant that was built in 1923, trying to use less solvent, and less Hazmat disposal and airborne emissions...
GM did it by trial and error unfortunatley.
