Will this help my performance any? Or is this just a crazy idea someone came up with. My friend told me i could use dry ice or just regular ice. The only problem is i don't know a way to make it stay on the outside of the intercooler and not let it get tangled up in any fans?

heard of it being done

A friend of mine said he and another guy did this. They cut the intercooler shroud so it had a hinged flap on it. they would open the flap and pack the front of the intercooler with dry ice.

Not sure of the details. Maybe he (Gavin) will read this and pipe up.

I have thought of doing the same thing. Don't really know if it would help but as long as you don't get the flap stuck in the radiator fan I can't see that it would hurt anything.

just dry ice is not the best, the co2 is a gas, thus your working with convection, which is not an efficient process, add some alcohol to the process ( alcohol will not freeze like water, it will turn to a gel, but will conduct some heat !!!!)and then you will have conduction working for you, water and antifreeze will also work, anti freeze would be safer too, but conduction is a far more efficient , we use this to cool bearings and bushings for a press fit, and it is a grat combo to cool, but it will not work for long, great for a drag race, bad for the street, unles you can make the tank removable for the street, just my 2 cents

There's a guy down here that ran 10.03 @134mph with a stock intercooler that was modified with a cool box and in the cool box he uses dry ice.

How about using water injection fellal's on the intercooler?

---Fill the winshield washer reservoir with crushed ice and water.

---plump a sprayer or winshield nozzle to the front of the intercooler cover to the reservoir

---use existing winshield water motor and wiring or seperate motor and wiring

--can use signal from turbo switch to turn on automatically and regular switch to turn on manually

Just an idea i been toying with. Only problem i forsee is nozzle clogging (if fine) or water dripping onto the floor (if coarse nozzle used) creating a wet track.

It's been done and there are websites about it.

Heres an original idea of mine. Use Co2 spray from paintbal gun c02 tanks (about 4$ to fill up from local paintball store). This stuff is ice cold . It actually creates frost when sprayed out liberally.

I would try to rig up one of these things myself, but i have so much other things to do before i reach this step.

the water sprayed on the intercoler sounds like it wold work, but that one would piss off a track if the water hits the ground during a run, or worst off the small tire big hp car behind ya that hits the water droplets, and ends up in the wall, the co2 idea is like them guys that spray nitrous ( whaat a waste of 3-4 dollar a LB ) on there intercooler, co2 and nitrogen are great replacements, and much cheaper, a setup with 4 nozzles on an intercooler would be killer, you would have to get one of them kevlar/carbon fiber reinforced paintball bottles, to match the other ones you have :D

Nitrous express make a kit just for intercoolers

I think I would use CO2 or N2 .

I know there were concerns in the past that dry ice or nitrous would fatigue the metal and crack it. Not sure if that was ever proven .....
