we use to make black with a black base and purple, i can't remember why- but i think the purple was to keep it from looking brown. but this was using rm paint at like macco or earl shives...

i had forgotten about glasurit, a friend used that on his car- it was slick and deep.

an old painter called me over one day. he told me to look down at 2 cans of clear he had. they were both new, and had the caps off. looking down thru the clear to the bottom of the can, one was yellow and cloudy and the other was crystal clear. he said that is how you can tell a really good clear.
both of them were high dollar clear, but one was better than the other.

Thanks for the replies.

I think I may have narrowed it down to two possibly choices.

1. PPG JBP 9700 Jet Black with a DCU2002 Clear
2. Sikkens Autobase Plus Jet Black 390943 with a Lesonal Glamour clear.

Does any have any experience with either of the two?
Or some other Base/clear combo.

I am anticipating trash in the paint, so buffing is a definite.

I did mine in "Kalapana Black" which is a 1950 Chrysler black, the deepest black I could find. If you put my GN next to a factory painted GN, you could definitely see the difference.

DBU/DBU 9700 is the "standard" basecoat Black....it is considered factory Black....you will be happy....I would recommend sealing the 2k primer with DP90 Epoxy primer...it is an extra step but will provide best adhesion between basecoat and primer....it will also help with any possible coverage issues as it acts as a groundcoat....also great for stone chips as you will not see the grey/yellow primer thur the back....DCU2002 is a great clear for the booth...make sure he uses the slowest hardener for the conditions so it will flow out smooth very little to no orange peel...if he is not shooting it in a booth I would recommend DCU2021 as it is more shop floor friendly

99k is duponts Factory Black same as 9700 in PPG or D403 in Diamont or 1250 in Glasurit or FP2002 in Spies is same Factory Black...now there is a Formula to Mix 99k with 3 alternates....Alternate 1 which is popular color position the Standard Formula.......but 99K is used for Nissan code 202 GM wa8555 gm code 19 Chry PX8 Toyota 202 Mercedes 040 etc...

If you going with PPG then go with DBC 9700. I forgot which PPG clear I used.

The DBC 9700 is a blue-black. A factory GN is done in a brown-black.

He is a pic of my truck done in it. Notice the reflection, I'm standing (yes shirtless) across the street. My gf is taking the pic.

Are you guys stripping the car down to bare metal before painting?
I have heard the factory paint needs to be stripped before going two stage.
Anyone know for sure? I'm thinking of paint fairly soon as well, thanks for the info.

I personally dont know why everyone get stuck on 2 sage paint.
Did you ever look at a Mercedes Benz? ever notice even how a 20 year old paint job looks?
Its single stage paint.

I would like to add some purple to the black when I do mine. just maybe 5-10% for the hint of it. Could be interesting? Being a painter I always thought it would give a nice look without really seeing purple at all.

I wouldn't mind going single, just seems everyone likes doing two stage.

single stage can be sweet if done right. need more time afterwards to block and buff. more time, very good results.

single stage on mine....no wet sanding...just polish and done....but then it was painted in a heated downdraft booth....

Probably has to do with almost everyone wanting a metallic color. Seems to be easier to do a metallic nicely in a two stage. Same goes with two tone and/or complicated stripe patterns. Or so I've been told.
