I also posted this in the suspension/brakes forum, but it's not strictly a brake thing...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found a small broken spring on the driver floormat the other day and couldn't figure where it came from. Then I set the parking brake and it wouldn't release. Apparently it was the spring that pulls the release handle back and also holds it to the foot assembly. Hope I'm describing that OK.

Is this a special spring, or would something from the hardware store work? Also, I can't quite figure out how it all fits together, so if anyone has insight on that, I'm all ears.

Thanks in advance.

Now with pics

Finally got the car and the camera in the same place together...

If anyone happens to be working under the dash and is feeling charitable :), the outlined piece is the release handle. Is the plastic grommet supposed to be attached to that metal bracket (A)?

Is there a spring holding (B) in place? This is the part that slips out when the pedal is pushed down.

You Are Correct. The Plastic Grommet Fits In The Metal Bracet Sir. I Had To Replace Mine In My 86 T-type in April. Easy Fix To Say The Least.. but I cant recall a spring in that area.

313bad, thanks for the info. Now I have a place to start. That spring must have come from someplace on the parking brake assembly, though. I'll have to take a look at another G-body to find out, I guess.

my question is how do you get that plastic piece A to stay in the metal bracket. every time i pull my ebrake realse it pulls the whole thing out.

the spring goes at the very end at what i can only describe as a "ball" and its holder.my car is at the paint shop still, not able to take a pic.

boost 321; put grommet in place in metal opening, then tighten with pliers

garyk, thanks. I sorta see what you're saying, but where does the other end of that spring go?

Digging up OLD threads...

in the hopes that someone may find this useful. I finally got around to looking at this mess again since it's a 3-day weekend (and the kids are old enough now that they can entertain themselves while I'm in the garage :)).

A new spring from the hardware store, a ziptie to keep the release cable in place, and now I can use the e-brake again. Since I don't drive the car that often, this was a low-priority fix, as you can tell.
