In trying to avoid the hassle of the dump/cat swap for emissions testing, I wanted to find out about registering my GN as a classic. If it can be registered as classic, do the techs at the stations then not even look under the car and not care that there's not a cat? I wouldn't think it would be right to fail you for something having to do with emissions when you only have a safety inspection taking place.
Also, I saw that PA appears to have an emissions testing exemption when you drive the car for less than 5000 miles after you own it for a year. Do any of you take advantage of this policy? I suppose I would need it emissions tested the first time though, so they could document my milage. :(

One of the mechanics also told me about registering it as a "Collector" car? I don't want to loose my personal lic. plate thow
I'm in the same boat as you, I try to only put 1k mi on my cars a year and don't want the hassel of emmisions. For years now they have just looked the other way with the dump pipe and no cat becouse they like the car:D but I think the new laws are going to be strict.

I just registered my car as a classic this past summer. I go to a mechanic that I know. From what I'm told if the car was equipped with a cat it has to be on even for the state inspection part. I agree that if your emissions exempt they shouldn't even look. Some guys go strictly by the book. My advice, go to somebody you know or keep the miles off. The mileage restriction was started for the elderly that are on a fixed income and can't afford the $35 for the emissions test alone.
