Just wondering if the hooker exhaust system would give me any noticable gain in performance over the stock exhaust and does it smooth out the exhaust note? I kinda don't like the put-put-put sound that the stock exhaust makes under light throttle. I like the Hooker because they say it doesn't have any resonance at cruising speeds.

Has anyone done "super turbo" mufflers? How did they compare w/ the stocker for performance and noise? Any comparison to the Hooker?

Thanks, James.

I have the Hooker exhaust and installed it about six months ago. It does resonate slightly at cruising speed. A crossover pipe might help. If I had to do it again, I might have gone with a large single pipe exhaust system, possibly with an exhaust cut out.

the factory exhaust is like trying to blow a golf ball through a water hose:eek: .

With the stock downpipe and cat and the cat back sytem with aerochamber muff (super comps do not flow as well) I would say a very conservative 10 hp and 20 lbs of tq. Gut the cat and the exh combined a conservative 20-25 hp and 40 lbs of tq.

Chip, etc will entail more.

My stock exhaust had seen better days when I replaced it, but I picked up almost 5 mph in the quarter when I put on the Hooker exhaust. Thats a huge gain.

5mph is a huge gain....your exhaust must have really been choking your car.
How is sound compared to stock? I don't mind a little more noise. I really want to get rid of the put-put "ricer" sound that it makes under normal acceleration. I hate the thought of sounding similar to a coffee-canned honda :)

I think it sounds pretty nice. Nice throaty rumble at idle, but not really loud at cruise at all. Does have a slight drone at around 2000 rpm, but I have a THDP and an test pipe, so that makes it a little louder.

Thanks, I think that will be the next thing I order...sometime down the road. One thing I miss about my LS1 was the nice rumble it had. I think the Hooker exhaust is the right match for me and with stock cat and down pipe it should be pretty quiet at cruise. Thanks for the insite, James.

Chambered mufflers will hurt performance on our cars. You need straight through mufflers to see any real gains. But the Hooker cat back (I think the mufflers are chambered) will be alot better that the stocker. I have those Dynomax super turbo mufflers in my T its alot louder than the stock system but then I had the cat removed also.

Thats the strange thing about the hooker aerochambers, they may be chambered, but they are also a strait through design. You can look strait through them. For $250-300 you can't beat the hooker catback. I ran the exact same times through the hooker system as I did when I had it dumping right after the downpipe.

I came from a LS1 car also. You can get some of the down low rumble with a decent catback on these cars, but you're not going to get a V8 sound at WOT. With a hollowed out cat and 3" ATR single shot my car sounds like a chainsaw on steroids at WOT. I didn't much care for the sound when I first got the car, now I love it.

Thanks for the insite. Well I just found out that my MAF is trash so it looks like THAT will be my next add-on. Never fails, just when you want to do something to increase performance you have to spend money on replacement parts. I'll look into the ATR systems but they are pretty pricey and i'm trying to keep expenses as low as I can.....doesn't seem to work very well though:)

You can buy remanufactured MAFs and the chain auto parts stores, the problem is that they are kinda hit and miss. Seems like 1 in 3 reman units don't work. Keep your reciept and take it back if it doesn't work. Only about $80. Otherwise you're looking at the LS1 maf and chip and translator or Max Effort R chip and no maf.

I would do that but I have a desease where if something goes wrong I have to replace it with an upgrade :) I want to make sure I'm spending my time on getting something that will last. I like the idea of having something on my car that is newer technology...don't mind spending the extra. From everything that I have read, the MAF translator takes care of everything, you don't have to buy an extender chip or anything.

I have the ATR Pit Bull 2.5 SS Duals. Love the Sound, Quality, & Fit. I believe these are the Super turbo Muffs?

The hooker catback is great. It even comes with a test pipe to replace the cat. Jegs has the best price and free shipping if i recall correctly.

I have the Hooker system and changed the muffs for a set of Walker race magnums(welded ultraflows) and really love the sound now. The hooker super comps were just too quiet for me..

I had always heard the Hooker system was very free flowing, but uncapping my dump at the track, with no other changes, gave me exactly 0.8 mph and a few hundredths ET more on the two subsequent runs. This is with a stock turbo, ported elbow and 3" downpipe.

Hooker is a great system. I bought it for my car when it still had the 307 olds in it. I adapted it to fit, and it really worked well, even on the v8.
When I did my transplant, I kept it on, so I couldnt really tell you about HP differences, since I never had a stock one. It does tend to drone at cruise, though.
It is a well built system, my car was run year-round here for quite awhile in the rust belt, and it is still holding up well 4 years later.
As for your MAF, if you want to upgrade, the translator plus kit is a great piece. If you plan on keeping your car for any length of time, it is worth it. The newer MAFs are a lot more vibration-resistant, and well built. It sure beats going to the parts store every couple of months when those crappy replacements fail.

Go with the Hooker Max Flows. The Hooker MaxFlows are straight-thru construction and flow 595 cfm @ 28" while the Aerochambers only flow 441 cfm at 28" (manufacturer's data).
