Tried to take my axles out to install wheel studs last night. But found that the bolt that holds the Pinion shaft in is broken (part of it is in the Carrier).:( Any one have any ideas on how to take the broken piece out of the carrier? And a new bolt part #.
Thanks,
Guy

I can't help with the part number but, have you tried turning out the broken bolt with a small pic or screwdriver? Sometimes the bolt breaks from torque not from over tightening. if not, your next bet is a left-handed drill bit or at worse, drilling and an easy-out.

Good Luck!

Jim

are you refering to the bearing caps? i wouldn't see why you would need to take the pinion nut off to pull the axles?

Sometimes you can use a shop rag to screw it out . If it is broken off flush or close to it you can use a dremel tool or something similar to cut a screw driver slot in it. Then use a small screw driver to turn it out. I don't think you will have much luck drilling it out. Those bolts are very hard. If it won't unscrew after cutting a slot in it try tapping it with a punch and hammer then try it again.

If you can clean/degrease it really good, a drop of JB Weld on the end of an equal sized bolt could be glued to the one that's in there and then maybe get lucky and remove it all a day later. I think worst case it would just twist off, JB and all. That bolt has red loctite on it so it'll be pretty snug.

I ran into the same problem on my Cutlass years ago.Here's what I did;
Grab a 3/16" punch and grind it to a chisel point[don't blue the point when you grind it.]
Take the punch and a small hammer and punch a slot in the broken off screw[doesn't have to be real deep].
When you punch the slot,you'll also be loosening the bolt so it should be easier to turn.
The idea is to make a slot deep enough to allow the punch to turn the screw,but not deep enough that it mushrooms the end of the bolt.
You may need to adjust the width of the punch,but 3/16" should be pretty close.Good luck.

i do them all the time ...they always break with the last thread still on the ...like some one mentioned use a pick or the tip of a test light and keep trying to turn it...it will have to be screwed out...sometimes it helps to lightly tap on the carrier while you try to screw it out

Mac Tools or Snap - On sells a tool specificly for what you are trying to do. It consists of a fixture that guides in a small drill bit. After the hole has been drilled it then requires the use of the easy -out supllied with the kit. This is of course you don't have any luck with the other good suggestions. Drew:)

Thank you guys!!!!

Thanks, For all the tips:) Now all I need to get is a new bolt. Anyone got the part #?
