I know this is probably a hot topic and one that 99% of those reading this thread will probably agree on. Methods will surely vary but it seems to me and most Americans that this lunacy needs to come to an end before the majority of poor Somalians see this as a tremendous business venture with a very lucuretive income.

By the numbers they currently hold over 600 hostages and 30 vessels the latest being a family with two kids.

Recently murdered 4 Americans while we simply denounce their behavior. These ransoms in the millions that companies have paid will if not already start affecting prices of goods/oil whatever that we pay.

It seems to me in the best interest of any country involved in shipping that something should secretly be deployed to virtually wipe out every boat/ship vessel along the Somalian coast except for small dingys with oars.

Sooner or later the ones that get millions in ransoms are going to reinvest into better ships bigger engines, better weapons and start venturing out further from land for their easy "prey".

Besides at this point the US needs to step up and make a quick statement since everything else we seem to be involved with just drags on and on and on....(Having served in Vietnam I get the picture).

Frankly I find it hard to believe it has been allowed to exist this long on such a huge scale. Killing of the 4 Americans that really shows they don't care about anyone after all what possible ransom would they be worth outside of what their family and friends could raise? That should have been the "straw that breaks the camels back."

That should have been the trigger for our government and others to say enough is enough. We got all these huge war ships....why spend millions of dollars on exercise runs when ours military can exercise the real deal and see instant results.

How many millions of dollars will we let them take from various shipping companies and continue to simply say we denounce their actions?

comments welcome.....which will probably run stronger than my words!

I am reminded of the quote the one Japanese General said after the successful surprise bombing of Pearl harbor. He said something like "I am afraid we have woken a sleeping Giant"

I apologize for not knowing the exact rank or quote but you get the idea.

The same can also hold true for what is now happening in Libya. Although I can see why the US has to restrain from that turmoil. That is a whole another topic.

I feel its well past time

for the US to play "cowboys and somalians"
this is beyond acceptable, station a carrier group not to far away, and scramble some fighters, won't take long for them to realize the error of their ways!

but that isn't "politically correct"
and we might get some of "somebodies" relatives! LOL:eek:

The problem really should not have been left to go this long now that 600 plus hostages are at "risk" for any type of deployment to not only take out the vessels they use but to rescue the hostages alive.

Not only the US but all the countries involved have sat on the side lines now too long to effectively erase the problem and at the same time save/rescue the hostages.

i agree

its time we took care of this mess but what can we do to people and country that has nothing take their sand away these people have nothing to lose but their lives. we denounce them as we feed them .i say stop feeding them

I see your point but that would be punishing all the people of that country. You never hear any reports that any of the pirates that have reaped million of dollars has had so much as a thought about donating any of it to feed their fellow countrymen.

Seems to be greed that propels them and they will never simply stop unless some country(s) take action other than simply a few harsh words denouncing their deeds.

Until this escaulated with 600 plus hostages it would seem like a small issue to quickly stamp out when compared to other conflicts the US gets involved with.

This group of thugs don't have any where near the might, strength and resources to go up against any of the major militaries in the world.

I just fail to comprehend how this continues....how many hostages have to get killed before some country(s) say enough is enough.

yeah

in the post blackhawk down world thats a slippery slope .they would see any attack as an attack on the people take their food away and they might go after the people with the money or just create a new group of pirates and if some one goes in it wont be the US under the current admin their to busy fighting us for our last dollar

Not only has our nation forgotten how to "walk softly and carry a big stick", they have forgotten what the "stick" is for.

Yep..

Not only has our nation forgotten how "walk softly and carry a big stick", they have forgotten what the "stick" is for.

Now, the saying is : "Walk stickly, and carry a big soft"...

One does not have to go to Somalia, to see how these scum operate...
Minneapolis is where you'll see the same crap going on. There is the country's largest "gang" of immigrants.
They have thier own "chapters" of Crips, Bloods, etc..
Time for Minneapolis to clean house.

tell every American vessel that is in that area that they have to have a .50 cal machine gun mounted onboard somewhere.
if they don't, they are on their own and they will not be saved by our military if they get in trouble..

While that may be a stop gap measure....you need to realize most sea going workers although probably love the adventure of the open seas etc did not sign up to put their lives in danger.

You need to cripple the pirates mode of transportation...eventually some of them with their stash of ill gains may start buying more sophisticated equipment and worse yet combine their efforts instead of venturing out in smaller groups.

The lure of the easy money for them is a mighty force....

First and most obvious is to find a way to get the hostages out. Once that is done, game on. Use bait boats and deal with the pirates the way the Russian special ops did. So far the Russians are the only ones that have shown sack.

It is a weak and cowardly useless State Dept and the rest of the Admin, period.

i don't know, the way the Navy SEALS took care of those pirates on that lifeboat last year was pretty ballsy. they parachuted a team of snipers onto a moving Navy ship without the bad guys seeing them, and they didn't even know what hit them when their heads suddenly all exploded at the same time..

That was impressive and done to save a hostage but, he Russians pulled a death squad after the fact. No bureaucracy and message sent. Fk the skinnies. No mercy.

did it not take the Navy somethig like 3 days to pull the trigger cause our leader could not make a decision on what to do, correct me if I'm wrong, it is
my understandig it was the Captain who said send it, the bullets I believe

Somali pirates hijack a Russian oil tanker. Russian marines storm tanker and capture pirates (see video). Pirates are supposedly released on to a boat that sets out on a course for Somalia. But that was 10 days ago, and no one has seen those pirates since.

Russia initially said that it would take the pirates to Moscow for trial. But Moscow now says that it placed the pirates in an inflatable boat with food and water – but no navigation aids and in the middle of the Indian Ocean, about 160 miles from the Somali coast.

Is Russia guilty of incompetence or indifference to human life? Or is this a taste of summary justice, a modern version of walking the plank, although walking the plank would probably have been more merciful than dying of exposure on a raft. You decide.

This is a case where the mind says that it’s wrong and futile to execute Somali pirates, who come from so impoverished and violent a land that more violence isn’t likely to deter them.

Yet the heart wonders whether a little rough justice is appropriate for those who hijack merchant ships for ransom. Will it serve as a deterrent for piracy? Let’s put it this way. There’s a story from Lebanon during the 1980s, when Hezbollah had a practice of kidnapping Westerners. One day, they kidnapped four Soviet diplomats, killed one, and kept the other three as hostages. The KGB promptly went out and grabbed the son of a Hezbollah leader, castrated him, stuffed his testicles in his mouth, and sent him back to Hezbollah with a message that there would be more of the same unless the diplomats were released. They were. And while Americans and Britons languished for years in captivity, Hezbollah never bothered the Soviets again.

This was an editorial by a journalist named Michael Peck that I found online. Just thought I'd share it.

most of that time was spent getting the snipers onto the ship and in position- they parachuted onto the moving ship in the dead of night, set up their equipment, and waited for the perfect time to take out all of the pirates at one time.
personally, i think they should have only gravely injured one of them and released him back to the wilds of Somalia to tell his buddies how it all went down to maybe spread the word that US ships are not to be messed with.

pirates

"Walk softly and carry a big stick" sorry for us that would be Political incorrect and under the current administration unacceptable we are to be everyone's friend and allie.
We shall take a back seat to any and all. Since vietnan we have lost the our way
The Military no long stands alone in strength, technology or intellegence capabilites. We must ask permission to do our job weather peacekeeping or fighting a war,the line has become blurred. We fight a battle of circumstance if they shoot at you and the bullet is with in 2 ft then you may duck if it wounds you, you may execute evasive measures "duck and run" We nolonger believe you kill one of mine I'll kill ten of yours

America spoke only when pushed! Like the old west sheriff would say to the lynch mob I have a shotgun with two barrels and a six gun with six bullets.
I promise I will take eight of you with me! who want to be first?

We have gone from a nation of sleeping Giant to toilet paper Dragon We have satillites that can tell if the pirates hangs left or right. we have seal and recon teams that you can drop by sub and destroy ships, planes, houses and village's. Not Politically Correct.
Can something be done yes, the problem is 40 years ago top secret ment you don't tell, when an order was given you carried it out you also didn't annouance what you were going to do on the 6 oclock news, film at eleven!

As you said The russians dropped them off and sent them on there way Russia statzi leave nothing to chance. The American people have been and are apothetic if it's not them they don't care. the Ideals of freedom is what we have, we've alway had and always will!

How we got that Freedom and what it requires to maintain it is obivious to our youth Our Kids can tell you how long it take to recycle a can or how many it takes to make a car, But they can't tell you what Veterans day is who the 2nd President was or who writes the laws of the land?

they think Pirates are cool A simple Question if A Pirate put a gun to your head do you ask how much moneys in his pocket, did he eat today or what kind of house does he live in or where does he live None of the above!

you hope that a Marine sniper is taking up the trigger slack until we stop running our mouths as a nation and start doing! it will not change

No one fears the big mouth, it's the quiet guy reloading his magazine that that makes you think twice just saying:cool:

I'd like to see that also, but unfortunately countries have very specific rules stating that merchant vessels cannot carry weapons into their waters.......that would make them warships. Hell, I don't think they can even carry handguns on their ships. If our border patrol agents can't carry weapons into Mexico, what makes you think other countries will allow merchant marines pack a .50 cal?

We should have a dummy boat sailing around the area fully loaded and ready to kill! When the pirates attempt to hijack it then the military pops out and cuts them all down. No one would know and other pirates would keep coming and have the same fate!

F EM!
