Ok...Here we go,
I had my tranny rebuilt by a mechanic who is very reputable in the area where I live. He is a really nice guy and I believe he is honest. It has been two years since the rebuild, and I have never been to happy about the shifts that it produced. He put all good stuff and had the reciepts to prove it. He bought the seperator plate from CK with the gaskets from what he told me. I was expecting nice firm shifts, but instead the shifts was soft, and actually kind of sloppy. The RPMs seemed to flare between shifts at WOT.
I have a good friend who is very smart about this kind of thing, he said it sounded like a problem with the valve body. Not only was there flaring, but the transmission would hunt gears when traveling 30-35. Sometimes it would stay in second until 35 or 40 cruizing.
I finally got a valve body from a fellow board member here and ordered a plate and gaskets from CK. I took the valve body out of the tranny tonight and noticed 6 check balls on the plate the mechanic installed when the instructions from CK states 5 are only used. I guess originally there were 7 as the instructions says that the remaining 2 check balls will ot be used. I have no idea what happened to the 7th. Between the lower side of the plate and the valve body there are three check balls. Is this correct?
The way I understand it is three check balls between plate and valve body, and 5 between the plate and transmission body.
I think I may have figured out my shifting problem and actually there may have been nothing wrong with my old valve body.

With the CK shift kit that is correct. I just put one in one of my turbo cars and it works nice. :)

I just came in from the garage a little while ago. I got everything put back together and all went pretty well. I really doubt anything was wrong with my old valve body, but I went ahead and put the other one in. I was in the process of driving the car and getting the fluid level right when it started to sprinkle. I put everything up at that point.
Shift timing is great. Shifting is getting firmer as the fluid level gets to its proper level. So far I am thrilled. The transmision has not shifted like that in a long time. It has not shifted like that since the rebuild. There was no debris in the pan, so I take that as a good sign. I should have a good solid transmission now as I had good stuff put in it. If only the check balls would have been put in properly.
Thanks for the replies. That really helped.
Boss 6. My overdrive was good. RPMS was flaring between shifts, and hunting between 2nd and 3rd at low speeds. I think all of that is a thing of the past now:biggrin:

which check ball was extra?

Just curious, do you know which check ball was the extra one? assuming that was the only cause of your problems. Which 5 are you using now? the attached picture if from the CK manual for reference.

Judging from that picture...No.
The kit came with a sheet that showed the check balls positioned on the seperator plate. Compared to the picture I recieved and the way they were actually positioned they were way off. I have a picture of that sheet. I have never been able to figure out how to post a pic on here. I will try later tonight though. Hopefully that will help.

Well. I cant figure out how to post a picture of the sheet I have consisting of placement of check balls. My image is too big. I have spent an hour at least trying to figure it out. I hate computers sometimes.
Message me and I can e-mail you a picture if you wish.
