I purchased a new MAF pipe and filter setup from Custom TR Parts and when i removed the old setup I found this damage to the turbo. I have not owned this car long and I know for a fact this did not happen while i have had it. Will this damage hurt the turbo if i continue to run it? It still seems to spool up nicely. Im just worried if this will throw anything out of balance and wipe the bearings. Is this a part that I can replace on my own or will I have to send it out to someone to get it fixed? If sending out is needed, do you have any suggestions? I was told this is a TA-49. It says garrett on the housing. I can take more pictures if needed. By the looks of it, i think one of the screens from the old MAF sensor did the damage because there werent any in it.
THanks in advance for any help or advice you can give me!

Um, no it's trash. Replace it or you will probably have more trash. Hopefully your intercooler filtered the big pieces that broke off out.

So I can't replace anything in this turbo? Its a big paper weight? There's not even any shaft play or oil leakage. Man if that's the case I'm gonna go for broke!

With your other mods this is a great excuse to buy a new dual ball bearing turbo. Dont throw any money into that ta-49.

I hate to say it but yes, that thing is trash. If it's money you are worried about, I believe GBODYPARTS has a big turbo sale going on. They can get ya fixed up without making you go broke.

x2 I completely agree!!! Except depending on the budget you really dont nned to go BB. You cant go wrong with any of todays turbo's. Lots of proven combo's out there.

p.s. 87NAT long time...............hope all is going well! J

Remember some chips require screens and some do not. Call Limit and get advice on a rebuild or there are lots of 49 turbos available for good prices.

I'd price up a new wheel and balancing first.

Nothing wrong with a good TA49. :)

I'd do some research perhaps call Limit Engineering and see if it might be a DIY project or get a cost estimate.

Make sure you check the other wheel and side for oil/damage before ordering any parts or committing to send it out.

Thanks for all the responses. I guess I should add that the main reason I asked this is that I wasnt looking for a good reason for a new turbo. The plan that I had going in my head included buying a downpipe and alky kit first. Then once I had maxed out that combo I was planning on buying a new turbo and injectors. So in light of the new information I have recieved from you guys, is it safe to say that i should not even bolt this back on the car? aside of the fact that I will ruin the turbo by driving it, should i be worried that this will come apart and hurt my engine? sorry for the rookie questions. this is my third buick, but my first turbo problem so I am a bit new to this realm,
thanks again for the help!

Good advice Alan.

Im already about broke! :frown: The current albeit small fund that i have started was for a downpipe followed by an alky kit so this is just a big setback that im hoping to tiptoe around and still get what i want for this racing season. I live in montana so racing season lasts about 3-4 months! thanks guys for all the info!

I just had one sent back to Precision for a rebuild. It wasn't cheap but it was less than a new turbo and I have a brand new (mostly turbo)

I think that wheel can be purchased for around 60.00 from limit engineering.

8uwith6 purchased a ta49 for his we4, the turbo came with a spare wheel and after looking at the wheel sitting at his house, it appears to be already balanced.

You might do some research, but it might be as simple as taking the compressor housing off, zip off the old wheel and install the new wheel. This is what the guys with the 7.3 powerstrokes do. No balancing required when just replacing the compressor wheel on those trucks.

Hope you can fix it cheap.
PS they used a air impact to bust it loose without taking the downpipe off.

It's been a few years but I had a similar problem. Precision fixed me up for $250. Don't remember exactly what they did besides the wheel but the turbo was "as new" condition when I got it back. I like my 49's.
