85 GN NEW PUMP,ADJ. REG. FILTER,K&N CONE,ECM,COIL PACK,MOD.,PLUGS, WIRES,. CAR SHOWS NO CODES. RUNS VERY WELL UNTILL YOU GET TO BOOST AND IT POPS AND ACTS LIKE ITS POSSIBLY OUT OF FUEL. REG IS SET AT 38# WHEN YOU WICK THE GAS IT JUMPS TO 42#. car has 150,000 miles and the injectors look like originals, could it be injectors? This car has been to the so called better shops. They have no clue. Please help

this happend to me once. try checking the plug wires...that the boots are secured onto the plugs.

did it just start doing it all of a sudden or has it been doing it for awhile?

getting worse ?

a lil more info before i tell ya the bad news.

motor ever rebuilt ?

last timing chain?

cam and lifters or valve springs ever been changed?

i know its alot of questions but a blind machanic has to ask...:)

I have the same problem on a fresh rebuild. Originally I blew the motor due to a water pump failure and scored the block...so I pulled motor.. bored it recranked and cam. lifters and pistons and chain..everything. Had the heads resurfaced and valves reseated..machine shop said heads looked ok beside that. Put it all back together and ran fine during breakin. Got about 1500 milles on it and went to Mobile One. Put another 500 miles on it and started running it hard. Felt the car jerk and looked back and was Fogging the whole state of Texas. First thing I did was pull the turbo.....figuring that is the only thing not redone...and shaft had lots of play. Take it to Majestic and spend 500.00 to make it stage 1. Slap it all back together and fire it and still smokes. After running it for awhile (almost all) the smoke quits. ****...pull the plugs and see #5 has got oil on it. Clean it up take it for a run and when I start to wind up the turbo she starts popping and acts like the knock sensor is shutting it down. Haven't broke into it yet as it is cold here now in Texas..at least to me. But I think I might have slipped a valve guide which is letting the oil in on #5 and causing my popping and timing retard. Does this soon possible Guys?? No oil in water....water in oil.... Car runs and Idles fine.... it's just when I go to get in to it. I know there are all kinda checks....compression..leakdown...but I been lazy...just seeing if anyone has had this situation before?? One more thing...I have a little scan tool error indicator that helps..but is a laptop really the way to go even though I am not a big racer. I have installed just about all the KB boltons I can..headers, ram error. turbo cam, new green stripe injectors, ultimate chip, shift kit, elec. fan all gauges except Knock???? With the stuff I listed and A proper tune..shouldn't this run fairly well. Like over a stock Mustang??

Oh Yea.. this is an 85gn also. And wires are new also....but am having a error code on TPS. Can't get the voltage right on high side. New O2.....New IAC.

I had the same problem with mine, it would run ok just driving but as soon as i hit a few psi it would pop real bad and some times shot the car down.

It was running way to lean , i changed to a 87 ecm , chip , and injectors , and turbo at the same time. And it want away . So if the turbo looks good , maybe the injectors.

Also did this when i forgot to put the 87chip in the 87 ecm, and was running the 85 chip .

I hope you guys aren't using the stock fuel pump.....it is way to small, and sound like you knocking the hell outta your fresh engines. Spend the $100 on a Walbro 340m and hotwire and then hang on, and yes it does make that much difference

I remember when I had my popping problems. It wasnt easy narrowing it down but I was able to finally make it go away.
I remember swapping the coil because the resistance between at least one tower was low (should be 11-13 ohms). I may have also swapped the module with an extra at one point (I didnt have a way to test it then).
The the most trying problem I had took some time to trace. My brother had realized that my fuel pressure would increase with boost, like it should.....UNTIL IT REACHED A CERTAIN POINT AND THEN WENT DOWN WHILE BOOST WAS GOING UP!
I traced this problem back to the fuel tank. The Postons HP pump that only had a couple thousand miles on it just wasnt cutting it. The worst problem is why. RUST IN THE TANK!!! I think the pump was killing it self dealing with all the crap in there. There was debris on the sock, the pump, and a pile in the bottom of the tank. I would have rather just had a collapsed fuel sock (which would be something to check too).
I wound up getting another tank and went ahead and put in a 340. The problem went away for a week or two.........(oops) if you go through something like this, dont forget to change the fuel filter too (yes it had crap in it too).
I think The alky kit I had put together really saved this engine, through all that popping and fuel problem I had some pretty bad KR. I can imagine what it would have been like without it!
Oh yea, I just remembered another problem I had for awhile with the ECM malfunctioning. I wouldnt get a code that would point directly to it, just 42 every now and then. Coil/module were good. I would swap out the ECM and the problem would go away! I also remember the Scanmaster scaring the heck out of me when I saw 20,then15,then35,then18 degrees of KR going on and on, and I wasnt really even boosting it! I swapped the ECM and it stopped. I noticed some moisture on the connection at the ECM one time, I dont know where it came from, but that may have had something to do with it, because after letting that ECM dry I think it worked fine. (I also had the same thing happen with the false knock recently, a bad MAF was the problem this time?!).
I dont know if any of this will help you (or just confuse you even worse) but I figure you mise well know what I went through with this tempermental little V6 (and its not over yet). I had a lot of problems hit at once, but somewhere in the midst of dealing with them the popping stopped (I had popping from the intake and the tail pipe at one point!). The car is running strong for quite some time now, without it having to blow up first (thankyou alky insurance!).
Sorry, so long, but I figure if I shared some of the crap I went through you could know more of the possibilities and may be able to use them to narrow down your INDIVIDUAL problems (these cars definately act like individuals at times).

make sure the spark plug gap is right ,I tried a wider gap once and mine pop a few times.

I am still using the stock fuel pump...but when I get back into this I will change to the walbro and hot wire it. Who has the best prices on this stuff??
