since i have my engine, trans, core support, and steering box off my 87 T, i was thinking of using this stuff on my frame, cross over, and upper control arms-

i hear you just brush it on and supposed to lay flat.

anyone use this stuff alot?
does it turn out looking like you sprayed it, or does it leave brush strokes?

does it shine like gloss, or does it look like semi gloss?

thanks for any input-
BW

POR 15 lays out extremely smooth. i would say probably 98-100% smoothness. i was goin to POR 15 my frame but i ended up doing a body off and haveing it powdercoated. if you want i can send you pictures of the rust preventetive stuff that they make that i put in my car. good luck.

i honestly dont know that much about the different products that they make, but i was planning on useing the chassis black top coat. i would call them (866) 635-0202. that is the number on their site if you have any questions. we always just get our when we go to the yearly swap meets in the area, as we dont use that much of it. hope all that helped. and i think that they make some ver good products, just make sure you do exactly as the directions say. if you don do all of the correct prep work, it will come off. but my neighbor had an old rusted piece of metal off of a car that he had cut out and coated with POR 15. he threw it out in the back yard and left it. when he got it like a year later, nothing had changed. he then put it in a bucket of salt water for a week or two. again, no effect whatsoever. this has been a couple of years now and he still has the piece of metal, and it still looks like nothing has effected it.

make sure you have plenty of benzine on hand-it is absolutely the only thing that takes this stuff off your hands-i had paint on my hands for about 8 days after doing my whole undercarriage!

Do a search in the Restoration section on this board. Some good info on POR-15. I currently just finished doing the trans crossmember and starting to prep the frame rails.

Here's some pointers - As with any paint project, make sure you use a drop cloth or newspaper. Wear latex gloves when handling paint and parts to be painted. Once POR-15 is cured on metal is next to impossible to remove without the use of a grinder or hammer & chisle. Have lacquer thinner on hand for cleanup. Use plastic sandwich wrap/bag between the lid and can, otherwise you'll be spending 10mins trying to pry the lid off the can the next time you need to use it. Don't ask me how I know this :)

I'll bet you a donut that no matter what you do the POR-15 will peel off within a few years...... I started using it 12+ years ago and I am convinced it is reformulated. The stuff from 12 years ago is still on there and the stuff that was on for a month peeled off.

I'd use anything but POR-15 on a frame for a frame-off resto.

I would try Eastwood's rust encapsulator if there is a rusty area. If you are sandblasting the whole frame, don't bother, do it "the old way"!

I agree with Mark B. The POR 15 I used 10-15 years ago was really tough stuff. The stuff they are selling now is no better than the Extend product that used to be sold in auto parts stores. My father used it on his car and the stuff is peeling off already. We had complained to POR 15 and they use the excuse that we didnt use their surface prep or clean the area properly. Total b.s. as the stuff from 10-15 years ago didnt require a separate seuface prep or total cleaning of the area. They used to claim that the nastier the rust, the stronger the bond and that was entirely true.
The stuff is obviously reformulated and even more expensive.
I personally would avoid it.

This is all very good info. I am currently in the process of frame-off resto-ing my car (since it got smacked by a concrete wall).

I was considering POR-15ing my whole frame but from what I've been reading it looks like I'll be giving that a second thought.

I see someone mentioned powder coating the frame. How much did that run you and does it really prevent any rust at all?

Thanks for the input guys!

If you want, you can have the POR15 that is peeling off my frame. Just use some scotch tape..it'll hold better.

I followed the directions to a T and it still peeled, and heaven forbid you have to use brake cleaner to clean something on your engine compartment.

por

doesn't POR stand for paint over rust I saw some comercials for the product that said nothing about preping the metal. Its good to hear about these things 1 gal is 100 dollars!

I painted my rear whick was covered in a fine surface rust. It was bare metal that had been sanded. Well I POR15'd it, then top coated it with spray paint, and in alot of places, the rust bled through. If you are painting bare metal like on a frame, there is metal prep that you must use prior to painting, and its not easy. That is where I have the peeling paint problem, on bare smooth metal. I must say however that it worked grat on my tubular upper and lower control arms and they were bare smooth metal, and i've seen it look really good on roll cages, but the frame around the engine compartment can see alot of corrosive fluids, and I beleive thats what did mine in.

I used it on my inner fenders(not the regal), and it's been a year so far so good. I was planning on using it on my frame, but not so sure after reading this. What else is there? Maybe one of the truck bedliner paints?

Well, what options do we have for protecting the frame? I don't want to spend alot of time and money on this stuff if it's gonna peel off and look like crap!

Has anoyone out there had GOOD luck with this POR-15 as of late?

YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT THE SURFACE YOU ARE PAINTING IS 100% FREE OF ALL OILY STUFF AND GREASE, AND IF IT IS SMOOTH METAL (LIKE A FRAME) YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO USE THEIR METAL ETCHING STUFF. I BOUGHT THEIR DEGREASER (MARINE CLEAN) THEIR METAL ETCHER (METAL READY) AND THE POR-15 ITSELF. I AM ABOUT TO PAINT MY REAR WITH ALL THE ABOVE PRODUCTS. I'LL POST HOW IT TURNS OUT. I'LL EVEN DO THE HAMMER TEST!:D A FRIEND OF MINE JUST DID HIS CAMARO WITH THE STUFF, HE WAS VERY VERY SURE TO CLEAN THE HELL OUT OF EVERYTHING, AND MAKE SURE THE SURFACE WAS BONE DRY. HIS TURNED OUT GREAT! AND WE BEAT THE SH!T OUT OF THE PAINT WITH A HAMMER A WEEK LATER, AND NOT EVEN A SCRATCH.;)

Well that makes me feel a little better. I'll be anxiously awaiting pictures and the final verdict!

i am the one who powdercoated my frame. it cost me $650 to have the entire frame blasted and powder coated, and let me tell you, it is beautiful (in my opinion). i will put a pic of the frame on my site(its really bad, but its free). i also went and bed lined the bottom of my car while it was on the rotisary. is it bad when the bottom of your car looks better then the top? the site is... www.geocites.com/iamjeff171

used por15 on frame

I did a frame-off restoration. The frame was sandblasted and the POR15 stuck to it with out any problems.

For the underbody, I spent a whole freakin summer using a wire wheel on my grinder to clean off the rust. It left a very smooth surface when I was done. The same POR 15 did peel off. The differece is how rough the surface is. POR 15 will not stick to a smooth surface, but does great on a rough surface like a sandblasted surface.

I finely added about 6 coats of POR 15 to the underbody and this made it thick enough not to peel. So far, fours years later, no problems.

Also, stay away from the new semi-gloss. It dries in different shades of black and grey. Use the high gloss, it looks great.

Oh, do not use plastic cups or buckets to hold the paint. It will eat through it in seconds.

You will always get different opinions. Just buy the smallest can and try it.

Hope this helps.
