i'm looking at getting a portable garage. I've been looking at a cover-it or shelter logic 12x24x10 garage. They have different options for the material and the metal bars. Does anyone have any input on these? I don't want to get something thats going to be junk in a year and i'm having a hard time finding info from people that have these.

Thanks,
Tim

I have an old cover it style. I am guessing 7 to 8 years old.
I bought it used about 1 year ago. It withstood heavy snow & winds this past winter.
I did notice when it rained it leaked in a few spots because of its age. I solved that with buying a $35- blue tarp at home depot & placed it over the top & held it down with bungee & string to stakes to solve that issue.

I am guessing since you are buying new that you won't have any issues.

I suggest putting it in a shady area if you live in hot area. otherwise mine actually heats up nice on a sunny day with cool temps out.

OH ALSO buy a indoor outdoor rug rem for your floor. makes it easy to work on car.

We bought the 12x20' (I think) garage-style directly from Shelter Logic a year ago. The assembly instructions were obviously written by someone who speaks Chinese, but we were able to figure it out.
The shelter does not leak at all, and it held a substantial amount of heavy snow at one time. It's the next best thing to a garage.
We paid $400 and $95 in shipping, but recently Pep Boys has advertised them for less.

The one in the link is exactly what we bought...'cept I think ours is 20' long, not 24. It's a nice piece and that's a good price.

This is the best price i have found so far. I'm just woundering if its going to last and if it can withstand Illinois winter.

TRY HARBOR frieght or NORTHERN TOOL ... I saw one in there like $300 delivered.. it was a special a while back.

Also you could add extra bracing yourself or ask if they sell snow kits that make them stronger.

from what i've seen there are many different makes of the same style. Some of them look very cheap. I've also seen the same ones for double the price on different web sites. I also know that there are two different material types, its hard to find good real world info on these.

When you are driving around the LAND of LINCOLN & see one up in a yard ring the bell & ask the owner... that is as close to real world as it gets.

FWIW I would put down a gravel base to park on. Grass and dirt holds a lot of moisture when covered. :)

I have a 24x12x10 one I bought at BJ's wholesale for 295. Takes about 3-4 hours to setup and get everything right.

There is plenty of room in there too with the extra 4 feet over the mail order ones. I have had it almsot a year now and it is holding up great.

I live in the northeast and we had a pretty bad winter this past year. I also keep my snowblower in it and when it did snow I would bang all the snow off the roof to help keep weight down.

i would like to build some type of floor for it. Maybe use plywood with some stone or something under it. I wont be parking any cars in it i'm justing going to use it for storage.

Here's the one from Northern ToolGarage
IMHO, I don't think the extra 4' is worth twice as much

I'm looking at one that is a 2 car garage 20'x22 for $925.00 2car since I'm not sure my real garage will be built by winter.

Good tip on the BJ's has them. ;) When I decide to replace mine I can buy it there..

Plywood makes good floors but will warp if you lay it on the ground..
In my small metal storage shed I used 16 mil plastic & crushed stones always stays dry in any season.

Harborfreight has a couple that are under $300, but sight unseen I guarantee that they will be very thin because that's how their stuff is (and I own a bunch of it, you just have to be intelligent about what you are getting). Try to find one in a store before you buy. Another place I get catalogs from that has a good variety is www.teksupply.com. Their prices are higher than hf but they list the thicknesses and materials. I've never bought from them so can't comment on service. Whatever you get, pay attention to the anchors. A friend bought one and thought he had it down good, using the screw anchors that came with it. We had a good hard thunderstorm with wind gusts of 50 or 60 mph last winter and it pulled out and flipped over.

I have two from Cover-it. One is 22x24, the other is 12x20. I like em both and would buy another.

I had to buy a new top cover for the larger one - put it right over the old. This is on a 6" slab with a small door in the back end. Ya need that for ventilation - they will heat up severely during the warmer months. I store two Buicks and a Harley in it.

The 12x20 is just placed on 4 sheets of plywood on a blue tarp with 2x8s to drive on. Dont see any moisture problems but Im on sandy soil so it drains quick. We have another Buick and 2 motorcycles in that.

The frames are powder-coated and IMHO of good quality. The only thing I worry about with these garages - is a tree falling on them.

i had a 10x15 until katrina, i did find it on the top of someone's roof all focked-up

i ordered the 12x24x10 from rvprotectionproduct.com it came to 569 total with the anchors shipped. That was the best price i could find. It should be here in a few days and i'll report back after i get it set up.

Not to get off topic, but I recently inherited a Cover It portable garage, unfortunately it did not come with instructions. We were able to get the outside walls up but we're not real sure how to attach the back wall and the door. Can anyone help out with instructions? By the way, it is the 12x24x10 garage. So far we like it, it is our first year having it up, so we would really like to get the door and wall up before the bad weather sets in. It has ample room for storage, and the dogs like to hang out in it.

Shelter Logic

Shelter Logic is one of my welding supply accounts. Built here in CT. They are having a "tag sale" right now if you buy it on site. Deals are fantastic to.My brother owns a few of them.He swears by them. He bought one without the tarp and paid 75 bucks for it.Brand new 14x20. Another guy from work bought 2 to make a huge chicken coup for 150.00(frame only). You can really get some deals if you can get there. Huge factory.

I have two Cover-it instant shelters. One is 12 x 20 x 10 tall with peaked roof and has zip doors on both ends. I use it as a garage and somtimes put a space heater in it and lights. It is roomy enough to work in and I can wash my car inside it in the winter, plus I can drive through it to get into my backyard.

Other is 12 x 20 x 8 with rounded roof and i put heavy black plastic ground cloth down and built a complete deck inside out of free oak pallets. This I use with shelving inside for storage of used parts. Don't put anything inside that you don't want to rust, they are not exactly dry inside.

Be sure to check with local zoning laws and restrictions!
