can anyone advise how to make sure an entire rear end is correct for 87 GN. I have the chance to buy a 10 bolt posi 3:42 gears. What should it look like and measure. I am told its from a Gbody.
THANKS

if it's for a G body and hasn't been altered in any way, it will have the screwball "metric" axle flange on it. instead of 4 bolts holding the brake backing plate to the tube, it will have a big funny looking flange with (i think) on big bolt and one little bolt holding the backing plate on.
if it is an 8.5- the correct rear end for any 84-87 turbocharged Regal- the stamped cover will be round, and there will be little triangular "ears" cast into the bottom of the center section. if it's a 7.5, the cover will be oval shaped and the bottom of the center section will be round.

There is an ID code stamped on one of the axle tubes. There are no VINs stamped on them so about all the code will tell you is what ratio and whether it has posi, assumming somebody hasn't had their fingers inside it. Post the codes here and I can decypher it for you.:)

It should be stamped on the forward side of the passenger axle tube according to the service manual. Within a foot or so of the pumpkin housing.
