I think the ceramic coating would stay on with the heat but they say that ceramic coating will "keep the heat in."

I doubt you will find any powdercoat that is able to handle the temperatures. I would not waste your $$. Buy a few cans of high heat spray paint and do them.

They do make 800 to 1000 deg. powders (Silicone base)

Standard powders will chalk up long term. Around the exhaust quickly.

yeah, i do my own powder coating and the do make powder that will withstand 1000 degree constant heat with a peak of 1200 degrees.

don't bother. engine spray paint is cheap enough and will hold up forever.

My 409 engine was powder coated. Only has a slight discoloration around the siamesed exhaust ports on the heads. Other then that no problem. It is yellow, so if you did black, it would be even better. My 409 is also blown, so it sees very high head temps similar to the turbo engines.

Thanks

I'd like to see a pic of your engine coach. I love a well done 409.

Here is my 409. I have owned it or 21 years. The entire engine is powdercoated and even the head bolts have been chromed. Never discolored.

Thanks
Coach

did you use the high temp powder or just the regular stuff, im not to worried about a little discoloration if just the regular powder will work. ive never had to much luck with just spray bombing my motor, the paint always cracks.

I have done a bunch of them ( regular powder ) if it is a very glossy powder
it will just dull out some. Mostly around the exhaust ports. But I am extremely
picky and critical. If you use a powder that is not high gloss you will not
notice as much. Do not use epoxy powder as it will chalk up. Just a nice TGIC
and you will be fine.

That motor looks great...

Thanks for all the replys about the engine. I need to put it back together and run it some more. Hasn't been driven in about 5 years.

As for the powder, I believe it was regular powder. That motor was done in 1997 or 98, I can't remember. I know powder technology has come a long way in that time. When I do my new turbo stroker, it will be done black. Powder coating does hold a little more heat than paint, not much, but some.

Thanks

I took an IR thermometer to my heads looking for a header leak and it's not as hot as you might think. 250 tops near the header flanges.

250 tops better check your thermometer

at idle your egt temps pre turbo are over 600*F or the o2 sensor wouldnt even work
egt temps just before turbo at boost are usually 1600+ and egt at the header tube near heads is 1700-1800F

well it looks like im gonna go ahead and powder coat. ill post some pics through my process if anyones interested.
