Nothing a little more boost and timing/tuning can't over come. Unless you already have the 8.5 and aren't beating on it pretty hard I would buy the 9inch and never look back. You can even recoup some by selling the 8.5 to the restoration crowd.

Setting one up is easy and you can carry or have an extra chuck with different gear ratio for drag and drive type things.

I been studying up on em and seems like a good path for me. I lost my job last year so we are building the stack back after that setback but once I get there I can do "fun" things again.

From what I have read , it's about 2-3% difference . Like TexasT said if you are not doing transbrake launches or 1.3 / 1.4 sec 60ft launches on a full weight car , just upgrade the axles and a good posi .

Typically in the NA world a th400/ford 9" combo eats up 35-45 hp, not noticeable at 800-1000 hp but very in 400-500 hp combo's
The 8.5 with Moser 30 spline's can hold a lot of power

An 8.8 is also a good choice.
Cheap. Last 3 I bought were $150 ea, loaded in the back of my truck.
Lots of fast Moosetangs with them.
