Ok guys and gals, I have notice quite a few of these ICs for sale but I have also notice that several people using them are having exhaust wheel failures. Has any one check the pressure loss of this IC? I am finding it hard to believe that percision turbo has sold that many bad turbos lately. I know every IC has some pressure loss ... I am just wondering what the amount is on these power stroke ICs. If some one has one of these installed on their car it would be nice if they could get a pressure reading on the inlet and on the outlet so we can see what the difference is. I am giving some consideration to installing one of these ... but I am a bit leary of them ... I really don't want to destroy my turbo. Any input on this will be a great help ....

Thanks,

David M.

SINCE I AM THE SOURCE OF THE PREOBLEM...

i posted it awhile back on mine at 20# boost in street trim which is high 11's in my car i had 21# at the turbo

so i had 1# of pressure loss at 20# so looks good to me.

Okay Red ..thanks .. I was just wondering. I have read where other people have experienced an exhaust wheel failure but not all the turbos had come from Percision but they all were running a powerstoke ic at 30 psi plus when the failure happened .. .. thanks for the reply .. at least it appears that it wasn't caused by a pressure drop in the IC.

just for note 2 on my car came apart at 26# with the ford i/c and the 2 that died on my buddy's car were at 23# with a stock motor stock i/c.

i think the guy who wrote me yesterday with a failure is running a v4.

i could go thru my emails and check others.

i told John Craig today that a guy would be calling him about a failure and he said one called earlier ...well they were not the same person...

there are so many failures already that i coulnt even find out how many.

everytime i call to check status on the report from garret i find out more are showing up all the time.

mine went to garrett about a month ago now and they looked at them and turned them away saying that they did not need anymore that mine looked just like all the other ones there already.

they were taken to garret in person by John Craig himself ...he looked at a few of the other ones they had and his responce to me was they are mirror images of yours.

thats all the info i can give till garret releases info.
i find it hard to believe they can say these wheels are failing due to the motors since they are turning them away that look like the ones already there.

who knows what they will put in writing since they are the manufacture im sure it will be carefully written.

i am not giving up till this problem is resolved..im sure people realize that ..possibly explains the virus sent to me yesterday..

What wheel did the PT-51 orginally come from? Is there any other turbo that has the same wheel as the PT-51? I'm glad I had my
Pt-51 upgraded to PT-54. But that was two years ago. Also where does Precision gets its Turbo parts?

parts are garrett parts..

54 should be different 51-52 have a 10 blade wheel all others i have seen have 11.

more and more 52 failures are starting to surface.
keep in mind the 52 dont get worked as hard to make the same power as a 51 so it should go a lil farther before death accurs..

Hey Red.............

You wouldn't happen to have a ford part number for that ic would you?........and if so, about how many dead presidents does it take to buy one........

heck i paid $250 for mine and it has plastic tanks but i got one for a friend of mine off here from tiny's turbo performance for $225 and they are alum tank models...they are new from ford and it is a nice unit ...we had the top 3 cores cut out of his and it fits much better ...fits under the lip on the top of the radiator support so there is no cutting up there and wont interfear with the hood.

i will be trying to get some pics of his setup soon.

more on this later..:)

1. I have the all aluminum version. I'll see if I have the part number, but as far as I know the replacements that Ford sells are the ones with the composite end tanks. I talked to Kerrdog (search this site) and he said that the Ford numbers superseed several times to a new number which is the composite model.

I found mine for $125 + shipping from someone in AZ. If at all possible, I'd get the all aluminum version. You can then cut/modify it to fit better. I had 4 rows cut off the top of mine. Even with the fabrication I figure I have just a little over $300 in the whole setup.

2. No, I don't have any pressure readings.

3. A clean installation CAN be done with MINIMAL cutting - anyone see mine at the Nats? To do so though, it will take some considerable time. I probably spent 2-3 solid days measuring, cutting, and installing mine. In addition to the IC mods, I cut and welded all the pipes. If someone were to do the same with mine as a template, it would still probably take one long day.

P.S. I couldn't of done it without the prior work done by Red & Mike (thanks guys!). Pictures will be posted soon on my site and new track times should be posted in the next week or two.

That's exactly what I did, except I removed 4 rows. The IC is still damn big!!! I only had to cut 2 holes for the inlet & outlet in the radiator support, and trim the bumper bracket mounting tabs. No other metal cutting was needed. I run the 2.5" pipes.

thanks for the info............if somebody can come up with a part #, I'll do some checking around and see what I can find out.........

I would get the plastic tanks unless you're planning on modifying one of the aluminum ones. Side by side the plastic tanks are good bit bigger. I got mine new for ~270 but obviously they can be found cheaper. I had a guage before and after the intercooler but no wastegate so I only took it up to 7psi but the guages read exactly the same and I switched them around just to make sure one wasn't off.
