problem going into gear

I've had this problem with my TR since i've had it. When i put the car into reverse it goes into gear nice and smooth. But if i go from park to drive, it take a second to go into gear and then it jumps and make a bad noise. If i put it in reverse and wait a second or two then shift into drive its fine. It drives fine and shifts great, infact it only has 2000 miles on it since a full rebuild. What could this be?

its makes a clunk noise. It will do it when its hot or cold, it does not pull forward in park or neutral. What do you mean run away?
